Arcane Staff of Power

Also known as: Power Staff

A towering staff of petrified Veylthorn wood, a tree that grows only in the aether-scorched groves of the Order of the Starlight's high sanctum, its shaft carved from haft to crown with interlocking runes in the Old Celestial script that seem to writhe when raw magic flows through them. At its apex rests a Lumenveil Crystal, a pale-blue gem harvested from the shattered moon-fragment that struck the Sun-Scarred Peaks millennia ago, pulsing with cold inner light even in absolute darkness.

Forged in the Third Age by Archmagister Sorvael Undine, the most celebrated aether-wright of the Order of the Starlight, who spent forty years petitioning the Celestials for permission to inscribe fragments of the Celestial Tongue directly onto a mortal object, permission eventually granted, reluctantly, after Sorvael helped seal the Rift of Kael'drath during the Sundering of the Aetheric Veil. The Lumenveil Crystal was set by Sorvael in collaboration with a Sphinx riddle-master of the Sun-Scarred Peaks, who bound into the gem a single unanswerable riddle, ensuring that no mind lacking sufficient arcane wisdom could ever fully unlock the staff's deepest resonance.

Overview

Arcane Staff of Power is a legendary weapon in Landorya. Its known origin is Forged in the Third Age by Archmagister Sorvael Undine, the most celebrated aether-wright of the Order of the Starlight, who spent forty years petitioning the Celestials for permission to inscribe fragments of the Celestial Tongue directly onto a mortal object, permission eventually granted, reluctantly, after Sorvael helped seal the Rift of Kael'drath during the Sundering of the Aetheric Veil. The Lumenveil Crystal was set by Sorvael in collaboration with a Sphinx riddle-master of the Sun-Scarred Peaks, who bound into the gem a single unanswerable riddle, ensuring that no mind lacking sufficient arcane wisdom could ever fully unlock the staff's deepest resonance.. Its most cited abilities include Amplifies the wielder's arcane spellcasting, allowing spells to pierce magical wards and resistances that would otherwise nullify them, including the venom-laced aetheric shields favoured by Naga sorcerers., Channels ambient aether drawn from ley-line intersections, refilling the wielder's spent magical reserves at a rate proportional to proximity to an active ley-line., and The Lumenveil Crystal at the crown projects a sustained Starlight Ward, a dome of pale-blue radiance that deflects projectiles and weakens shadow-bound entities tied to the Fey Court of the Eternal Twilight.. Accounts also warn of a drawback: The Old Celestial runes hunger for knowledge they were never given: each time the wielder stores a spell within the staff, the runes silently consume a fragmen…

History

The Arcane Staff of Power first proved its legend during the War of Ashen Tides, when Sorvael himself wielded it against the Naga warlord Ssitharex at the Battle of the Drowning Shelf, shattering the serpentine army's aetheric bulwarks and turning the tide for the allied Human and Order forces. Upon Sorvael's death, the staff passed into the keeping of the Order of the Starlight's Grand Reliquary in the Sanctum of Aetheric Heights, where it was studied and occasionally lent to trusted archmages facing existential threats. It was stolen three centuries later by an Eldorian shadow-broker known only as the Pale Cartographer, who sold it piecemeal intelligence to the Fey Court of the Eternal Twilight in exchange for safe passage through the Twilight Roads, though the Fey, wary of the Starlight Ward it projected, ultimately refused to touch it directly. The staff's current location is unknown; the last credible sighting places it in the possession of a Desert Scholar hermit dwelling in the Obsidian Wastes east of the Sun-Scarred Peaks, who reportedly uses it merely to light his reading tent at night, either sublime indifference or masterful concealment.

Powers & Abilities

  • Amplifies the wielder's arcane spellcasting, allowing spells to pierce magical wards and resistances that would otherwise nullify them, including the venom-laced aetheric shields favoured by Naga sorcerers.
  • Channels ambient aether drawn from ley-line intersections, refilling the wielder's spent magical reserves at a rate proportional to proximity to an active ley-line.
  • The Lumenveil Crystal at the crown projects a sustained Starlight Ward, a dome of pale-blue radiance that deflects projectiles and weakens shadow-bound entities tied to the Fey Court of the Eternal Twilight.
  • Allows the wielder to transcribe any spell witnessed into the runes along the shaft, storing up to three spells for later casting at double their original potency.
  • When planted firmly into the earth, the staff resonates with Talamhari frequencies, briefly revealing hidden ley-lines, buried wards, and underground structures within a wide radius.

Curse or Drawback

The Old Celestial runes hunger for knowledge they were never given: each time the wielder stores a spell within the staff, the runes silently consume a fragment of the caster's personal memories, small things at first, a name, a face, a childhood sound, but cumulative across months of use. Archivists of the Order warn that prolonged wielding risks the slow erosion of identity itself, leaving behind a supremely powerful mage who no longer remembers why they ever sought power at all.
