Driftstep Boots
Also known as: Levitation Boots
Stitched from the wind-bleached hide of a Zephyrian sky-elk and laced with braided strands of aether-thread, these knee-high boots shimmer with faint silver runes that pulse like a slow heartbeat against the leather. The wearer feels an uncanny weightlessness creep up from sole to spine the moment the buckles are fastened, as though gravity itself has quietly withdrawn its claim.

- The Driftstep Boots were crafted in the high spire-forges of the Order of the Starlight by the aether-wright Selavyn Duskmantle, a half-Zephyrian artificer who sought to gift ground-bound allies of the Order with a measure of the sky-freedom her people took for granted. She infused each stitch with condensed aether drawn from a captured wind-vortex above the Aelthran Peaks, binding the magic with a spoken covenant rather than a glyph-seal, making the boots responsive to intent rather than command word.

History
Selavyn gifted the first completed pair to a Human scout-captain named Torvael Bren, who used them to spy upon Drakonian war-camps along the Ashen Ridge during the Third Incursion, relaying troop movements that saved the northern settlements from annihilation. After Bren's death at the Battle of Cinder Crossing, the boots passed through the hands of a Halfling courier collective who stitched false soles over the runes to disguise them as ordinary travelling wear, smuggling them across Naga-held river territories for a generation. The Order of the Starlight eventually reclaimed them when a Naga warlord discovered the boots and attempted, catastrophically, to fly across the sacred Mirren Shallows, only to have the boots reject his claim mid-flight, an event that became known among the Naga as the Humbling of Ssavrek. They are currently held in the Reliquary of Ascending Light within the Order's Aelthran Spire, on loan to any sanctioned agent deemed worthy of Selavyn's covenant.
Powers & Abilities
- ✦ Levitation: The wearer may lift silently off the ground up to 20 feet, hovering with perfect stillness, ideal for crossing chasms, bog-fields, or the razor-edged obsidian flats of the Scorched Wastes.
- ✦ Short-Range Flight: With concentrated will, the wearer can propel themselves horizontally at swift gliding speed for up to a quarter-mile before the boots require a brief rest on solid ground.
- ✦ Featherfall Passive: Any fall, voluntary or accidental, is slowed to a gentle drift, the wearer cannot take impact damage while the boots are worn and their runes are active.
- ✦ Terrain Negation: The boots hover the wearer a hair's breadth above difficult surfaces, mud, ice, broken scree, or Talamhari thorn-fields, leaving no tracks and suffering no movement penalty.
- ✦ Aetheric Silence: Steps taken at ground level produce no sound whatsoever, as the boots bleed residual levitation energy into each footfall.
Curse or Drawback
The boots are bound to Selavyn's spoken covenant of intent: any wearer who uses them in an act of pure cowardice, fleeing and abandoning an ally in mortal peril, will find the levitation inverting without warning, pressing them downward with twice normal gravity until sunrise. Prolonged or repeated betrayals cause the runes to blacken and crack, permanently degrading the boots' power until they are re-consecrated at the Aelthran Spire.
