Star-Crystal

A carefully prepared crystal of high-purity quartz harvested from the Crystal Dunes and subjected to a multi-stage infusion process during which captured starlight is locked into the crystal lattice through a combination of celestial alignment and sustained Sand-Weave concentration. The finished crystal ranges from thumbnail-size to fist-size depending on its intended application, and glows with a faint, steady blue-white internal light that intensifies during Starfall and dims but never fully extinguishes during the Burning season. It is warm to the touch in a way that does not correlate to ambient temperature.

Origin
Star-Crystals are produced by master-rank Sand-Mancers who simultaneously hold certification in Celestial Navigation, as the infusion process requires accurate alignment of the crystal to the star whose light is being captured. The process cannot be rushed: infusion requires one complete clear night per crystal, during the Starfall season only. Each crystal produced during a single night bears the resonance signature of the star it faced, and experienced Scryrs can read this signature to determine the original infusion session.

Overview

Star-Crystal is a uncommon focusing lens in Landorya. Its known origin is Star-Crystals are produced by master-rank Sand-Mancers who simultaneously hold certification in Celestial Navigation, as the infusion process requires accurate alignment of the crystal to the star whose light is being captured. The process cannot be rushed: infusion requires one complete clear night per crystal, during the Starfall season only. Each crystal produced during a single night bears the resonance signature of the star it faced, and experienced Scryrs can read this signature to determine the original infusion session.. Its most cited abilities include Celestial Scrying focus: when used as the central lens in a Celestial Scrying array, amplifies and stabilizes astral projection, allowing senior Scryrs to maintain consciousness at extreme distances and with significantly greater perceptual acuity than unaided practice permits, Astral Relay medium: serves as the reflective surface in the desert-wide Astral Relay mirror network, bouncing starlight-encoded signals between stations at speeds no other physical medium available to the Scholars can match, and Passive record: absorbs and retains an impression of any Sand-Weave interaction within approximately one metre of its surface, functioning as a secondary evidence-archive for magical events in its vicinity. Accounts also warn of a drawback: A Star-Crystal that is deliberately shattered produces a resonance pulse that briefly suppresses Celestial Scrying capability within a radius of approximately…

History

Star-Crystals have been the foundational medium of Desert Scholar celestial technology since the early centuries of the order's existence. The standardization of their production process was one of the first acts of the original High Scribe-Council, following a period in which inconsistent crystal quality was causing failures in the nascent Astral Relay network. The current production protocol, codified in the Ministry of Celestial Navigation's Master Standards document, has been in continuous use for approximately two hundred years with only minor revisions. A Star-Crystal recovered from the Sunken Valley of Thal-Marek, confirmed by resonance analysis to predate the current civilization, is the single strongest piece of evidence supporting the hypothesis that the First Archivists used a similar or identical technology.

Powers & Abilities

  • Celestial Scrying focus: when used as the central lens in a Celestial Scrying array, amplifies and stabilizes astral projection, allowing senior Scryrs to maintain consciousness at extreme distances and with significantly greater perceptual acuity than unaided practice permits
  • Astral Relay medium: serves as the reflective surface in the desert-wide Astral Relay mirror network, bouncing starlight-encoded signals between stations at speeds no other physical medium available to the Scholars can match
  • Passive record: absorbs and retains an impression of any Sand-Weave interaction within approximately one metre of its surface, functioning as a secondary evidence-archive for magical events in its vicinity
  • Storm forewarning: emits an audible crystalline tone approximately two hours before a major sandstorm reaches its position, attributed to resonance with the electromagnetic charge that precedes large storm systems

Curse or Drawback

A Star-Crystal that is deliberately shattered produces a resonance pulse that briefly suppresses Celestial Scrying capability within a radius of approximately fifty metres, including all Astral Relay connections passing through the area. The effect lasts several hours. This property is considered sufficiently dangerous that the Balance Codex prohibits the deliberate destruction of a Star-Crystal except under Ministry of Sand-Weave permit, and lists the act as a Sand-Weave Ethics offence regardless of motive.
