Runic Gauntlets
Also known as: Fire-Gauntlets, Smith's Rune-Hands
Paired gauntlets of obsidian-composite steel fitted with an elaborate rune-circuit array covering the palms, knuckles, and finger-guards, designed to allow a Drakonian mortal to channel, direct, and modulate fire-magic output with the precision normally achievable only by beings with natural dragonfire biology. Each gauntlet is individually fitted to its wearer by a master Runic Smith through a process of heat-calibration that encodes the wearer's specific thermal signature into the circuit array, making the gauntlets effectively biometrically locked without being physically secured.

Overview
Runic Gauntlets is a rare armor in Landorya. Its known origin is Developed by Krakos the Smith in collaboration with the Runic Engineer's Guild as a solution to the persistent bottleneck in Magma-Core maintenance: the most delicate reactor-calibration tasks required fire-magic precision that mortal engineers lacked, forcing Magma Drake involvement in operations where draconic scale was a logistical problem. The first generation of Runic Gauntlets was calibrated specifically for Magma-Core work; subsequent generations have been adapted for smithing, Archive crystal encoding, and — controversially — combat applications in the Order of the Scaled Guardians.. Its most cited abilities include Fire-magic channeling: allows a Drakonian mortal with latent fire-magic sensitivity to produce controlled fire-output equivalent to a Fledgling drake's precision discharge, Modulation control: rune array allows the wearer to adjust flame intensity, duration, and dispersal pattern through deliberate finger-position combinations encoded during the fitting process, and Thermal feedback: the palm circuits transmit real-time heat-state information to the wearer's nervous system, allowing intuitive awareness of ambient magical heat levels. Accounts also warn of a drawback: The biometric calibration that makes Runic Gauntlets effective also makes their misuse dangerous: a wearer who attempts to channel fire-magic at outputs beyond…
History
Runic Gauntlets have been a controlled Shard-Guild product since their introduction, with each pair registered in the Crystal Archive under the name of its first certified wearer. The Drakonian Senate debated their classification as a restricted arcane instrument for three sessions before accepting the Shard-Guild's argument that the biometric lock made unrestricted distribution manageable. Approximately two hundred certified pairs are in active use across the empire; a further forty are in the Archive's reference collection, including the original prototype pair made for Krakos the Smith himself, whose palm-circuit calibration the Crystal Archive describes as the finest yet achieved.
Powers & Abilities
- ✦ Fire-magic channeling: allows a Drakonian mortal with latent fire-magic sensitivity to produce controlled fire-output equivalent to a Fledgling drake's precision discharge
- ✦ Modulation control: rune array allows the wearer to adjust flame intensity, duration, and dispersal pattern through deliberate finger-position combinations encoded during the fitting process
- ✦ Thermal feedback: the palm circuits transmit real-time heat-state information to the wearer's nervous system, allowing intuitive awareness of ambient magical heat levels
- ✦ Runic inscription augmentation: when used for craftsmanship, the circuits amplify the precision of rune-etching work, allowing mortal smiths to achieve inscription tolerances normally requiring draconic fine-motor control
- ✦ Passive heat-shielding of the hands and forearms against ambient forge temperatures
Curse or Drawback
The biometric calibration that makes Runic Gauntlets effective also makes their misuse dangerous: a wearer who attempts to channel fire-magic at outputs beyond their latent capacity risks a circuit overload that drives the palm runes into the skin, burning the circuit pattern permanently into the flesh of both hands. The scarring is non-lethal but irreversible, and the pattern burned in is the exact inverse of the gauntlets' intended output range — a permanent physical record of the precise point at which the wearer exceeded their limits.
