Aetherite-Lattice Shields
Also known as: Lattice Shields, Crystal Shields, Ward-Shields, Iron Guard Shields
Aetherite-Lattice Shields are the standard defensive equipment of the Iron Guard's Battalion of the Anvil, forged from Crystal-Infused Alloy plates arranged in an interlocking lattice pattern and inscribed with layered Ward-Runes. Unlike conventional shields that stop blows through sheer mass, the Aetherite lattice distributes kinetic force laterally across the crystalline structure and converts a portion of any magical strike into a stored charge that the bearer can optionally release as a counter-pulse. The shield flexes like heavy leather under pressure while deflecting both physical blows and low-level spells, making it effective against the Drakonian flame-magic and runic artillery that the Iron Guard most commonly faces. Each shield bears the clan sigil of its original wielder etched in gold alloy wire and is considered a personal heirloom as well as military equipment.

- Origin
- Aetherite-Lattice Shields were developed during the Age of Strife as a direct response to Drakonian mages who learned to pierce conventional iron shields with targeted runic bolts during the Great Rift War. The Warden of the Frontier at the time commissioned a joint project between the Fire-Smiths Guild and the Rune-Masters Guild to produce a shield that could answer magical attack as well as physical, and the lattice design emerged after twelve years of experimentation.
- Current Owner
- Standard issue to the Battalion of the Anvil across all four major Holds. The finest specimens, inscribed with additional self-sustaining runes, are held by the personal guard of each Thane and by the Order of the Stone-Heart's deep-zone patrols.
Overview

Its most cited abilities include Dual-Layer Defence: The Aetherite lattice absorbs kinetic force from physical strikes while Ward-Runes simultaneously convert magical energy from spell impacts into inert heat, providing protection against both mundane and arcane attacks., Counter-Pulse: After absorbing a magical strike of sufficient force, the bearer can activate a trigger-rune to release the stored energy as a directed pulse that staggers opponents within two metres., and Flex-Adaptation: The lattice structure reshapes fractionally under pressure and returns to its original form when the force is released, preventing the shield shattering under repeated heavy blows.. History
Aetherite-Lattice Shields were field-tested for the first time during the Drakonian Siege of Baragorn, where the Battalion of the Anvil held a tunnel chokepoint for thirty-six hours against sustained dragonfire using the shields' elemental resistance. The Counter-Pulse ability was discovered accidentally during that engagement when an exhausted soldier's shield discharged and threw three Drakonian warriors off a ledge. Post-siege analysis of this incident led to the deliberate incorporation of the Counter-Pulse trigger-rune in subsequent production runs. A ceremonial set, inscribed with gold and gemstone, hangs in the Thunderhall in Baragorn as a memorial to the defenders of the siege.
Powers & Abilities
- ✦ Dual-Layer Defence: The Aetherite lattice absorbs kinetic force from physical strikes while Ward-Runes simultaneously convert magical energy from spell impacts into inert heat, providing protection against both mundane and arcane attacks.
- ✦ Counter-Pulse: After absorbing a magical strike of sufficient force, the bearer can activate a trigger-rune to release the stored energy as a directed pulse that staggers opponents within two metres.
- ✦ Flex-Adaptation: The lattice structure reshapes fractionally under pressure and returns to its original form when the force is released, preventing the shield shattering under repeated heavy blows.
- ✦ Rune-Reinforcement Signal: A shield in contact with stone flooring transmits a structural resonance signal into the Runic Grid, alerting Rune-Sentinels to the bearer's position and status — invaluable in tunnel engagements where visibility is near zero.
- ✦ Elemental Resistance: Ward-Runes inscribed during forging provide specific resistance to the most common elemental threats faced by the Iron Guard — Drakonian dragonfire, Drakonian frost-breath, and the lightning-magic of the Rune-Sentinels of rival holds.
Curse or Drawback
An Aetherite-Lattice Shield that absorbs more magical energy than its Ward-Runes are calibrated to handle enters Overload, in which the lattice begins re-emitting the stored energy chaotically. The bearer's arm goes numb as the energy discharges through the handle, and the shield's crystal lattice can fuse, rendering it permanently rigid — a well-crafted shield, destroyed not by the enemy but by its own capacity to protect.
