The Twilight Stones

Also known as: The Dusk Monoliths, The Speaking Stones, Court Stones

The Twilight Stones are a set of living monoliths distributed across every Court-Circle within the Fey Court of the Eternal Twilight's realm that resonate with and echo rulings issued by the Court of Dusk simultaneously across all locations the moment a judgment is inscribed, ensuring that no Court-Circle can claim ignorance of a ruling and no ruling can be altered after publication by changing one stone without all others reflecting the discrepancy.

Overview

The Twilight Stones is a unique monolith in Landorya. Its known origin is The Twilight Stones were established simultaneously with the Court of Dusk during the Covenant's drafting, each stone grown from a single original crystal that was split into thirteen pieces, one for each founding Court-Circle, then distributed. The original crystal is said to have been a fragment of the Heart-Stone of the First Twilight, though the Heart-Stone shows no corresponding gap in its structure and Lady Lirael has neither confirmed nor denied this account.. It is currently associated with The Court of Dusk (judicial authority of the Fey Court of the Eternal Twilight). Its most cited abilities include Simultaneous Broadcast: any ruling inscribed into the Court of Dusk's primary Stone appears instantaneously on all distributed Stones across every Court-Circle, Tamper Detection: any attempt to alter an inscription after inscription causes the affected Stone to emit an audible harmonic tone and flash visible to all nearby Fey, and Precedent Storage: contain the complete inscribed legal record of the Court of Dusk stretching back to the Covenant's establishment, accessible by direct contact for those with judicial clearance. Accounts also warn of a drawback: Deliberate destruction of any single Twilight Stone causes all other Stones in the network to develop a fissure matching the damage, and the legal record store…

History

The Twilight Stones have presided over every legal ruling in Fey history, including the Veil-Balance Act codification, the post-Veil-War treaty terms, and the controversial Thornshade Accord provisions. The damage from the Unseelie Schism Stone-attack became the basis for one of the Court's most significant legal developments: a ruling, inscribed across the remaining undamaged Stones, that destruction of a Twilight Stone constitutes an act of war against every Court-Circle simultaneously, not merely the one whose Stone is targeted.

Powers & Abilities

  • Simultaneous Broadcast: any ruling inscribed into the Court of Dusk's primary Stone appears instantaneously on all distributed Stones across every Court-Circle
  • Tamper Detection: any attempt to alter an inscription after inscription causes the affected Stone to emit an audible harmonic tone and flash visible to all nearby Fey
  • Precedent Storage: contain the complete inscribed legal record of the Court of Dusk stretching back to the Covenant's establishment, accessible by direct contact for those with judicial clearance
  • Enforcement Resonance: rulings inscribed into the Stones carry a binding resonance that makes violation subtly detectable through the Dream-Weave to authorized monitors
  • Cross-Circle Witness: any Fey who places their hand on their local Stone at the moment of inscription experiences a direct sensory impression of the Court of Dusk deliberation that produced it

Curse or Drawback

Deliberate destruction of any single Twilight Stone causes all other Stones in the network to develop a fissure matching the damage, and the legal record stored in that Stone's position becomes inaccessible across the entire network. The fissure does not heal. This effect has occurred once, during the Unseelie Schism, when a rogue Circle attacked its local Stone. The resulting damage to the legal record of that period has never been fully reconstructed.
