Crystal-Toothed Cog

Also known as: The Balance Cog, Codex Cog

A precisely machined bronze cog whose every gear tooth has been individually replaced with a sliver of raw Aether Crystal, faceted and set in gold-filigree cradles so that the crystal segments interlock perfectly with matching mechanisms. The central hub is stamped with the three-interlocked-cog sigil of the Clockwork Assembly, and the entire device vibrates at a sub-audible harmonic frequency when held by someone attuned to Arcane Gearing. It is the central heraldic symbol of Gnomish arcane-tech integration, representing the union of clockwork precision and crystal magic. Certified copies are awarded to Master Artificers who complete the Balance Codex examination; a unique original resides in the Ministry of Arcane-Tech Integration as the authority seal.

Its most cited abilities include Acts as a precision calibration instrument for Arcane Gearing processes, allowing the bearer to sense mana-to-metal ratio imbalances by touch, Amplifies minor enchantments woven into metal while the cog is held in contact with the workpiece, and Serves as a recognized proof of identity for senior Artificers when presented to Assembly officials or diplomatic envoys. Accounts also warn of a drawback: If the bearer deliberately violates the Mana-to-Metal Ratio restrictions of the Balance Codex, the crystal teeth begin to develop micro-fractures visible only…

History

During the Ghost-Gearing Outbreak of the late Age of Enlightenment, a Crystal-Toothed Cog belonging to a disgraced Artificer was recovered at the center of a corrupted mechanism, its crystal teeth still vibrating with the stored resonance of the soul-binding runes that had been illegally inscribed nearby. The Ministry used that recovered cog to establish the first Arcane Forensic Protocol — the practice of using a cog's resonance imprint to identify who last handled an illegal enchantment. The symbol thereafter took on a second connotation: justice as well as balance.

Powers & Abilities

  • Acts as a precision calibration instrument for Arcane Gearing processes, allowing the bearer to sense mana-to-metal ratio imbalances by touch
  • Amplifies minor enchantments woven into metal while the cog is held in contact with the workpiece
  • Serves as a recognized proof of identity for senior Artificers when presented to Assembly officials or diplomatic envoys
  • When placed at the center of a gear mechanism, stabilizes erratic Arcane Overload resonances, buying time for controlled shutdown

Curse or Drawback

If the bearer deliberately violates the Mana-to-Metal Ratio restrictions of the Balance Codex, the crystal teeth begin to develop micro-fractures visible only to the bearer — a progressive warning that becomes audible as a faint, discordant crack when the violation grows severe. The cog cannot be repaired until the bearer formally submits to Ministry review.
