Self-Repairing Gear-Mesh is a composite lattice of interlocking micro-gears woven from Aetherite-Alloy wire, each gear tooth engraved with regenerative Arcane Gearing runes that draw ambient aetheric energy to drive a continuous self-maintenance cycle. When a section of the mesh sustains damage — whether from impact, corrosion, Drakonian fire, or magical disruption — surrounding gear-teeth detect the change in rotational resistance within milliseconds, reroute power to the compromised zone, and begin extruding new wire from integrated reserve chambers to rebuild the broken lattice. The result is an outer shell that repairs most battlefield damage within thirty minutes, rendering automatons equipped with it extraordinarily difficult to permanently disable. Invented by Master Engineer Thrum Ironspike, it is the standard outer shell for all Automaton Guardians of the Automaton Guard Corps.

History

The first prototype Gear-Mesh was tested in Year 839 AE on a single volunteer Bulwark Unit at the Ember Rift proving grounds. The automaton sustained forty-seven separate impacts over six hours and had self-repaired completely by the end of the trial period. Mass adoption across the Automaton Guard Corps transformed the Ember Rift Conflict of Year 842 AE: Drakonian forces repeatedly reported automatons they believed disabled rising again within the hour, severely degrading Drakonian tactical morale and contributing to the eventual Treaty of Ember. Master Engineer Ironspike was awarded the Grand Gear of Innovation — the highest civil honour in Gearhaven — at the Festival of Gears in Year 843 AE. Current research under Ironspike's direction explores adapting the Gear-Mesh formula for civilian infrastructure, including bridge reinforcement and the outer walls of the Aether-Steam Reservoir.
