Hollowmaw Satchel

Also known as: Holding Bag

A battered satchel of smoke-cured wyrmskin stitched with thread spun from collapsed star-matter, its mouth sealed by a brass clasp etched with the Gnomish Compression Sigils of Underloft. Though no larger than a saddlebag, it opens onto a pocket of folded aether-space vast enough to swallow a merchant's entire caravan stock without so much as a bulge.

The first Bags of Holding were conceived by the master artificer Pellwick Drossmore of the Gnomes of Landorya, working deep in the workshop-warrens of Underloft during the Age of Mercantile Expansion, when trade routes between the Iron Mountains Dwarves and the Desert Scholars grew too dangerous for large caravans. Overview

Hollowmaw Satchel is a rare vessel in Landorya. History

Pellwick's original workshop produced eleven such bags before the aether-crystal vein beneath Underloft was exhausted, and these became prized along the Dust-and-Scale trade road connecting the Desert Scholars' city of Khareth-Solum to the Iron Mountain passes. One bag, called the Underloft Seventh, was carried by the halfling courier Mira Tumbleseed through the Siege of Verdant Crossing, famously concealing the entire payroll of three Orc mercenary companies within its folds, a feat that prevented a mutiny and earned her a statue in the Halfling village of Clovenmere. The Seventh was later lost when Mira's descendant wagered it in a riddle-duel against a Sphinx of the Sun-Scarred Peaks and answered incorrectly; the Sphinx has since used it as a treasury, stuffed with centuries of unclaimed forfeit prizes. Replica bags of lesser quality are now produced by Gnomish traders in Underloft, lacking the timeless-suspension property, and circulate commonly along Landorya's major trade routes.

Powers & Abilities

  • Holds a volume and weight far exceeding its physical dimensions, up to several hundred pounds of gear stored within its aether-folded interior.
  • Items placed inside are suspended in a timeless pocket: perishables do not rot, flames do not spread, and poisons do not off-gas while sealed.
  • The owner may mentally 'index' the bag's contents; a faint chime and subtle tug guides their hand directly to any desired item without rummaging.
  • The bag muffles sound from within entirely, live creatures, clanking armour, and arcane resonance are silenced to outside ears.
  • Once per day the owner may whisper the name of a stored item and it will rise to the bag's mouth unassisted, as if offered by an unseen hand.

Curse or Drawback

If a living creature is sealed inside for more than one hour, the aether-fold destabilises: the bag vents a violent implosion, destroying all contents and leaving nothing but a smouldering brass clasp. Likewise, piercing the bag's exterior with a blade while it is loaded risks catastrophic aether-collapse, scattering every stored item across a random plane of the Elemental Deep.
