Crystal Marks
Also known as: Imperial Marks, Crystal Coin, Marks
Crystal Marks are the standardized currency of the Empire of Azaria — disc-shaped coins of refined resonant crystal calibrated to precise weight and magical conductivity by the Imperial Mint under the Guild of Trade. Each denomination is distinguished by crystal grade, size, and the density of its embedded Runic inscription: Shards are translucent pale grey and thin as a thumbnail; Facets are a warm amber with a more pronounced inner glow; Prisms are deep blue-violet, palm-sized, and visibly pulse with an inner light; Radiants are near-clear with a multicolored internal refraction visible in any light. The mana-signature embedded in each Mark by the Mint makes counterfeiting extraordinarily difficult, as any false disc will fail to resonate correctly against a standard Verification Stone.

- Crystal Marks replaced the weight-based system of raw crystal barter used in the early Riverine Confederacy following the founding of the empire in Year 312. Emperor Aurelius I established the Imperial Mint in Year 318 as one of his first acts of economic consolidation, recognizing that a unified currency was as essential to empire-building as a unified military. The resonance-verification system was introduced in Year 450 after a wave of crude counterfeiting threatened trade confidence.

Its most cited abilities include Each denomination resonates at a precisely calibrated mana-frequency that can be verified instantly by any Verification Stone, Crystal Marks are self-cleaning, repelling dirt and oxidation through passive mana interaction, so that coins in circulation maintain mint condition indefinitely, and High-denomination Radiants emit a faint visible glow in low light, allowing quick identification in dim environments.
History
The Crystal Mark is one of the most trusted currencies in Landorya, accepted at face value in the Halfling Freeholds, the Nereid Confederacy, and most dwarven trading posts without conversion fees. During the Crimson Campaign, the High Council authorized emergency issuance of war-grade Shards — lower-purity discs with reduced conductivity but sufficient for domestic transactions — to fund the military campaign without depleting the Mint's high-grade crystal reserves. These war Shards were retired from circulation in Year 845 and today are collector's items among guild historians.
