Mana-Scanning Orbs
Also known as: scan-orbs, Registry orbs, magic detectors
Palm-sized spheres of high-clarity resonant crystal carried by Azarian Border Wardens, Arcane Registry officers, and Guild of Medicine practitioners for real-time detection and classification of magical signatures in persons, objects, and spaces. The Orb's internal crystal lattice is calibrated during manufacture to resonate with the ambient mana field around it and display its findings as internal color patterns visible through the sphere's transparent surface: deep blue for registered and benign magical artifacts whose signatures appear in the Arcane Registry; amber for unregistered items requiring documentation; red for items classified as Tier-3 Hazardous or above by the Arcane Balance Act; a flickering white-gold for active magical constructs or ongoing enchantments; and a deep, uneasy violet reserved for objects tainted by dark or forbidden magic. A trained operator can narrow the scan to specific magical frequency bands, isolating, for instance, necromantic residue from a background of benign enchantments, making Mana-Scanning Orbs valuable both for border security and for forensic investigation.

- Uncommon
- Origin
- Developed by the Arcane Registry in Year 711 following the enactment of the Arcane Balance Act, which required systematic monitoring of artifact movement across the empire's borders. The original design used a fixed-frequency scan that could only detect gross magical presence; over successive generations of refinement, Guild engineers added the color-spectrum classification system, the Registry-cross-reference crystal, and the frequency-narrowing capability that makes the modern Mana-Scanning Orb a sophisticated forensic instrument.

Overview
Mana-Scanning Orbs is a uncommon detection device in Landorya. Its known origin is Developed by the Arcane Registry in Year 711 following the enactment of the Arcane Balance Act, which required systematic monitoring of artifact movement across the empire's borders. The original design used a fixed-frequency scan that could only detect gross magical presence; over successive generations of refinement, Guild engineers added the color-spectrum classification system, the Registry-cross-reference crystal, and the frequency-narrowing capability that makes the modern Mana-Scanning Orb a sophisticated forensic instrument.. It is currently associated with Standard issue to Azarian Border Wardens and Arcane Registry officers; civilian models available through licensed alchemical suppliers. Its most cited abilities include Detects and classifies magical signatures within proximity using color-coded internal display visible through the crystal surface, Cross-references detected signatures against the Arcane Registry attunement database carried in the Orb's calibration crystal, and Frequency-narrowing capability allows isolation of specific magical types, including necromantic, elemental, or dark magic traces.
History
Mana-Scanning Orbs played a critical role in uncovering the network of Necro-Cult of the Black Veil sleeper cells that had embedded themselves in El'goroth's merchant population in the years preceding the Crimson Campaign. Registry officers conducting routine market sweeps began detecting the characteristic deep violet signature of necromantic residue on apparently ordinary trade goods, eventually tracing the supply chain to three compromised warehouses in the Dock Ward. The discovery gave the empire critical intelligence that shaped the Crimson Campaign's opening strategy. In peacetime, the Orbs' most common use is identifying unregistered alchemical artifacts at provincial market fairs — a less dramatic but commercially significant function that generates substantial fine revenue for the Guild of Justice.
