The Debt-Marker Pearl
Also known as: Kairo's Pearl, The Spirit's Debt
The Debt-Marker Pearl is a smooth, flawless black pearl carried habitually between the first and second fingers of Captain Kairo Tidewalker's right hand, left there by a sea spirit in the aftermath of the hurricane that made his reputation as a navigator. It is warm to the touch regardless of conditions, and its surface carries no blemish despite years of daily handling. The pearl marks an obligation: when the sea spirit who left it calls, Kairo must transport whatever cargo it designates, to whatever destination it names, with no questions asked and no conditions negotiated. He has fulfilled this obligation three times. He does not know what a fourth obligation would mean, and the pearl itself has given him no indication. What is certain is that each time the obligation has activated, the pearl has grown perceptibly warmer in his hand for the preceding three days, and that what the spirit has asked has been neither comfortable nor convenient.

History
The Debt-Marker Pearl has been in Kairo's possession for the entirety of his adult command career, a period of more than two decades. The three obligations it has activated are not matters of public record, though Islander oral tradition — which tracks the movements of the Azure Trading Company with close attention — has proposed candidate voyages for each based on routes Kairo took that had no visible commercial rationale. He does not confirm or deny these attributions. The pearl appears occasionally in contemporary Islander storytelling as a modern iteration of the Debtor's Pearl legend, updated with a captain rather than a pearl-gatherer and a sea spirit rather than a Nereid, suggesting that the underlying mythological pattern is being actively adapted to living experience.

Curse or Drawback
The Debt-Marker Pearl's obligation is binding in a way that Islander sea-magic scholars classify as among the most absolute forms of magical compulsion documented in the archipelago. Kairo cannot refuse the spirit's cargo without consequences that he declines to specify beyond describing them as worse than any storm he has survived. The nature of the spirit's cargoes and destinations has remained undisclosed; he responds to questions about them with a change of subject that those who know him well understand as meaning: you do not want to know.
