The Tidemark Stone

Also known as: The High-Water Inscription, The Floor of the First Tide

The Tidemark Stone is the ancient floor inscription at the center of the Temple of the Tides marking the high-water line from the era of the Ocean's Children, the first generation of Islanders who emerged from the enchanted foam at the Nereids' behest. Carved directly into the temple's basalt floor, it takes the form of a continuous curved line approximately twelve metres in diameter, accompanied by a inscription in the oldest known form of Foam-Tongue that scholars have partially translated as a statement of the ocean's original authority over all law and human arrangement. Believed by scholars to be one of the oldest surviving artifacts of Islander civilization, it serves as the physical and spiritual center around which all Court of the Tidemark proceedings occur, every Islander who touches it in the annual Tidemark ceremony making contact with the moment preserved in stone when the sea's authority first met the land.

Origin
The origin of the Tidemark Stone is, by definition, beyond the reach of Islander historical records. Islander tradition holds that it was inscribed not by mortal hands but by the ocean itself on the night the first Ocean's Children came ashore, the high-water mark of the Nereids' gift left permanently in stone as the boundary between divine sea and human land. Whether this is literal or mythological is a question that the Academy of Currents has agreed, by informal consensus, to leave permanently open.

History

The Tidemark Stone is mentioned in the oldest surviving Islander written texts, always as an already-ancient feature of the temple. Its institutional role as the center of Islander judicial practice appears to have developed gradually over the first few centuries of formal governance, as the Court of the Tidemark established the tradition of holding all proceedings around it. The annual Tidemark ceremony, at which any Islander may touch the inscription, was formally established by a council resolution that is dated but whose original document describes it as formalizing a practice already centuries old at the time of codification.

Powers & Abilities

  • Those who touch the inscription during the annual Tidemark ceremony consistently report a brief sensory experience of standing at an ancient shoreline, hearing waves that no longer exist
  • The stone maintains a faint warmth perceptibly above ambient temperature regardless of seasonal conditions, attributed by Islander tradition to the Nereids' continuing presence in it
  • Judicial proceedings conducted in its presence are held by Islander tradition to be bound by the ocean's impartial authority, a belief that has proven remarkably effective in preventing the kinds of corruption that undermine legal systems elsewhere in Landorya
  • The inscription appears to slowly self-repair minor physical damage — chips, cracks from seismic activity — over periods of months, a phenomenon documented in the Court of the Tidemark's maintenance records but not scientifically explained

Curse or Drawback

No curse is associated with the Tidemark Stone. However, individuals who have served as Court of the Tidemark judges for many years report an inability to make decisions of any consequence — personal, commercial, or otherwise — without unconsciously seeking the equivalent of the ocean's confirmation. Several retired judges have described this as a difficulty distinguishing between judicial gravity and ordinary life choices that escalated gradually over their years of service.
