Celestial Herd Totems
Also known as: Spirit-Horse Markers, Trail Totems
Celestial Herd Totems are carved wooden figures representing spirit-horses in motion, typically standing thirty to sixty centimeters tall, placed at significant camp sites and trail junctions as markers of a specific caravan's passage and as prayers directed to the Celestials through the Herd's symbolic form. They are carved from plains hardwoods in a stylized tradition that emphasizes the horse in mid-stride and the aurora streaming from mane and tail, with each caravan's totem incorporating small distinguishing elements, beads, feathers, or painted symbols, that identify the caravan that placed it. A trail junction marked by a totem tells a following caravan not only that someone has been here but who, in what season, and with what prayer.

History
The oldest surviving totems are located at the most ancient junction points on the primary migration routes, preserved by the dry plains climate in conditions of partial decay that the Nomads treat as a visible mark of their temporal depth. The totem tradition was nearly lost in one generation when a sustained period of conflict required caravans to move without the usual placing ceremony; the resumption of the practice at the end of that period is commemorated in the oral record as a restoration of normalcy more significant than most political events of the same era.

Curse or Drawback

Misuse of the inverted totem is one of the few actions that can result in formal censure by the Elders Council.
