The Migration Staff
Also known as: The Guide's Staff, The Path-Keeper
The Migration Staff is a single carved hardwood staff carried by the confederation's leading guide at the head of the primary migration caravan, the visual embodiment of navigational authority and generational continuity in the Nomadic leadership tradition. The staff itself is old enough that its original carved form has been smoothed by generations of handling into a surface more polished than any finishing tool could produce, yet it continues to be added to by each generation's leading guide: new feathers, beads, and carved symbols are affixed at significant route decisions, creating an accumulating record of the migration's history in the staff's physical form. The leading guide's first act when taking the role is to add their identifying mark to the staff; their last act upon passing the role is to formally present it to their successor.

History
The Migration Staff has been carried at the head of the primary Nomadic migration for as long as the oral tradition records the role of leading guide. Joran Skywatcher, whose route-songs have opened new migration corridors, added several carved waypoint symbols to the staff during his tenure as leading guide for the northern expansion migration, marks that subsequent guides still read when planning the northern route. The staff's presence in the oral history is pervasive: it appears at every major navigational decision point, every confrontation at trail junctions, and every formal transfer of navigation authority in the confederation's recorded memory.

Curse or Drawback
No formal curse is associated with the Migration Staff, but the oral tradition records that the two occasions on which the staff was lost, once to a river crossing accident and once to a raid, were followed by navigational errors that cost the primary caravan significant time and a smaller number of lives. Whether these events were caused by the staff's absence or by the same extraordinary circumstances that caused the loss is a matter the Mystical Stewards do not attempt to resolve.
