Orb of Scrying

Also known as: Scrying Orb

A fist-sized sphere of petrified Deepwater coral harvested from the sunless trenches beneath the Shimmering Isles, its interior swirling with perpetual silver mist that parts to reveal distant scenes with cold, unsettling clarity. The surface is etched with the interlocking wave-glyphs of the Naga, and the orb hums faintly at the touch of any who carry the gift of foresight.

The first Orbs of Scrying were grown rather than forged, shaped by the Naga artificer-priests of the Sunken Sanctum during the Age of Tidal Accord, when the Naga sought to monitor the freshwater territories encroached upon by expanding Human settlements along the river deltas. Overview

Orb of Scrying is a rare relic in Landorya. Its known origin is The first Orbs of Scrying were grown rather than forged, shaped by the Naga artificer-priests of the Sunken Sanctum during the Age of Tidal Accord, when the Naga sought to monitor the freshwater territories encroached upon by expanding Human settlements along the river deltas. They cultivated living coral within chambers of concentrated aetheric brine, etching each sphere with wave-glyphs that bound the Oceara spirits of still water into the coral's porous heart, gifting the finished orb its tireless inner sight.. Its most cited abilities include Remote Viewing: The bearer may fix their gaze upon the mist and witness any location they have previously visited or that has been described to them in precise detail, projecting their senses across vast distances., Temporal Echo: Once per lunar cycle the orb may be coaxed to replay a scene from the recent past, up to seven days prior, at the site being scryed, allowing the viewer to witness events that have already transpired., and Whisper of Intent: When attuned to a specific individual whose true name is spoken aloud, the orb betrays that person's general emotional state and broad purpose, though not their exact words or location.. Accounts also warn of a drawback: The orb demands a toll of perception from its user: every hour of sustained scrying permanently dims the bearer's natural eyesight by a faint but irreversible…

History

During the War of Salt and Sorrow, a matched pair of Orbs was seized from a Naga outpost by Desert Scholar cartographers who used them to map Naga troop movements across the inland waterways, turning the tide of three pivotal skirmishes and earning the artefacts the Scholars' epithet "the Twin Deceits." One orb was later gifted to the Order of the Starlight as payment for aetheric counsel, where it resided in the Observatory of Pale Threads for two centuries before being stolen by a Fey courier during the Night of Unravelling Pacts. The stolen orb is rumoured to drift through the Fey Court of the Eternal Twilight, passed between courtiers as a gambling prize, its salt-water link to its twin long since severed. The remaining orb sits beneath a glass dome in the Grand Archive of the Desert Scholars in the city of Aur-Sadhek, consulted by senior cartographers on matters of state, though it has shown nothing but silver fog since its pair was lost.

Powers & Abilities

  • Remote Viewing: The bearer may fix their gaze upon the mist and witness any location they have previously visited or that has been described to them in precise detail, projecting their senses across vast distances.
  • Temporal Echo: Once per lunar cycle the orb may be coaxed to replay a scene from the recent past, up to seven days prior, at the site being scryed, allowing the viewer to witness events that have already transpired.
  • Whisper of Intent: When attuned to a specific individual whose true name is spoken aloud, the orb betrays that person's general emotional state and broad purpose, though not their exact words or location.
  • Veil Detection: The orb pulses cold and dim whenever a warding spell or anti-divination enchantment lies between it and its target, alerting the user that something is being deliberately hidden.
  • Resonant Link: Two Orbs of Scrying forged as a matched pair may be used as a two-way mirror, both users may observe each other simultaneously, the connection persisting until one orb is submerged in salt water.

Curse or Drawback

The orb demands a toll of perception from its user: every hour of sustained scrying permanently dims the bearer's natural eyesight by a faint but irreversible degree. Naga priests mitigated this by rotating use among many acolytes; solitary wielders who have relied on the orb obsessively have been known to go blind within a decade, their eyes filmed over with the same silver mist that swirls within the coral sphere.
