Pendant of Life

Also known as: Life Pendant

A teardrop-shaped pendant of pale gold filigree cradling a flawless heartstone, a gem found only in the sacred springs of the Naiads, that pulses with a soft, rose-coloured light as though a second heart beats within it. Worn close to the chest, it radiates warmth that even the dying can feel, and those who have glimpsed it in battle claim the air around it smells of rain-drenched earth and new blossoms, even in the depths of winter.

The Pendant of Life was crafted in the twilight age of the Celestial Order's stewardship of Landorya, wrought jointly by the Naiad spirit-weavers of the Mireth Springs and a master goldsmith of the Eldorians named Sorvael the Tender, who spent forty years petitioning the Naiads for a single heartstone. The Celestials themselves breathed a thread of divine life-force into the setting during the Rite of the Undying Flame, binding resurrection magic into the gem so that death might never be entirely beyond reach for those who walked in the light.

Overview

Pendant of Life is a legendary talisman in Landorya. Its known origin is The Pendant of Life was crafted in the twilight age of the Celestial Order's stewardship of Landorya, wrought jointly by the Naiad spirit-weavers of the Mireth Springs and a master goldsmith of the Eldorians named Sorvael the Tender, who spent forty years petitioning the Naiads for a single heartstone. The Celestials themselves breathed a thread of divine life-force into the setting during the Rite of the Undying Flame, binding resurrection magic into the gem so that death might never be entirely beyond reach for those who walked in the light.. Its most cited abilities include Resurrection: Once per full lunar cycle, the pendant can restore a soul to its body, provided the bearer died no more than three days prior, the heartstone dims to grey for seven days afterward as it recovers its power., Miraculous Mending: Channels concentrated life-force into grievous wounds, closing them within moments; poisons of Naga origin, however, resist its touch and require the wearer to concentrate for a full hour., and Life Sense: The wearer perceives the vitality of all living creatures within thirty paces, sensing wounds, sickness, and the nearness of death as a shifting warmth or coldness against their skin.. Accounts also warn of a drawback: The weight of stolen death is not without cost: each resurrection worked by the pendant shortens the lifespan of its wearer by one year, a toll felt as a sudde…

History

For two centuries the pendant was kept in the Sanctuary of the Everbloom, a Naiad-blessed shrine at the heart of the Eldorian capital, where healers of the Order of the Starlight would borrow it during plagues and wars, most famously during the Grey Rot that swept through the Halfling villages of the Verdant Marches, where it is said the pendant was used eleven times in a single month to call souls back from the threshold. It was lost when the Drakonian warlord Keth Varos sacked the Sanctuary during the War of the Sundered Vale, and for a generation it passed through the hands of Orc chieftains and Desert Scholar traders, each unaware of its true nature and treating it as little more than a curiosity of fine make. The Order of the Starlight eventually traced it to the markets of the Shimmering Isles, where a Gnome antiquarian named Pell Dustvane had it displayed behind glass, unaware that the dimmed heartstone had been slowly brightening again for years. It was recovered by an Aether-sworn courier mere months before Dustvane could sell it to an anonymous buyer, and the pendant now rests under heavy guard in the Starlight Sanctum of the Order's mountain citadel, studied but seldom worn.

Powers & Abilities

  • Resurrection: Once per full lunar cycle, the pendant can restore a soul to its body, provided the bearer died no more than three days prior, the heartstone dims to grey for seven days afterward as it recovers its power.
  • Miraculous Mending: Channels concentrated life-force into grievous wounds, closing them within moments; poisons of Naga origin, however, resist its touch and require the wearer to concentrate for a full hour.
  • Life Sense: The wearer perceives the vitality of all living creatures within thirty paces, sensing wounds, sickness, and the nearness of death as a shifting warmth or coldness against their skin.
  • Warding Aura: Allies within arm's reach of the pendant are slowed in their dying, lethal wounds take twice as long to claim them, granting precious moments for aid to arrive.
  • Verdant Blessing: When pressed to barren or blighted soil, the pendant can restore a small plot of land to fertility, a power the Talamhari earth-priests once used to heal fields scorched during the Ashen Campaigns.

Curse or Drawback

The weight of stolen death is not without cost: each resurrection worked by the pendant shortens the lifespan of its wearer by one year, a toll felt as a sudden streak of white in the hair and a deep, bone-cold exhaustion that lingers for days. Wearers who invoke the resurrection power more than three times in their lifetime begin to hear the whispers of those they have brought back, fragments of whatever the dead witnessed beyond the veil, and the bravest of scholars in the Order of the Starlight warn that prolonged exposure to those whispers has driven two former bearers to obsessive madness.
