Storm-Orbs

Also known as: Tempest Spheres, Gale-Orbs, sky-glass orbs

Storm-Orbs are hand-sized spheres of tempered sky-glass, each encasing a compressed fragment of living storm energy sealed by aeromantic inscription etched into the interior surface during a single continuous ritual conducted at the Tempest Rift on the night of a major storm. They glow with a deep internal blue-white radiance that intensifies when atmospheric disturbances are near, and in the hands of a licensed aeromancer they serve as focusing lenses for advanced weather-working, force projectors for defensive barriers, and discharge vessels for concentrated lightning bursts. The Tempest Tribunal issues Storm-Orbs only to practitioners who have passed the third-tier aeromantic licensing examination.

Storm-Orbs were developed by the Ministry of Currents during the early period of the Aerial Confederacy as a portable alternative to the fixed Wind-Glyph Relay network. Overview

Storm-Orbs is a rare arcane tool in Landorya. Its known origin is Storm-Orbs were developed by the Ministry of Currents during the early period of the Aerial Confederacy as a portable alternative to the fixed Wind-Glyph Relay network. The first functional prototypes were tested by Cloud-Mason artificers working alongside Storm-Smiths, combining the metallurgical knowledge of crystal induction with the glass-blowing traditions of the Aero-Plaza craftspeople. The current standard design was ratified by the Tempest Tribunal roughly eight hundred years ago and has changed little since.. Its most cited abilities include Focused lightning discharge, releasing stored storm-energy as a directed bolt of electrical force, Wind-shield generation, projecting a compressed air barrier capable of deflecting blade strikes and arrows, and Storm sensing, the orb brightens and vibrates in the presence of approaching storms or aerial magical activity. Accounts also warn of a drawback: A Storm-Orb kept dormant for more than one year without periodic energy cycling will begin drawing atmospheric moisture inward, creating a local cold-snap. If…

History

Storm-Orbs have been the standard arcane sidearm of Zephyrian aeromancers, Wing Guard officers, and Gale-Cartographers for centuries, and their regulated manufacture is one of the Tempest Tribunal's principal functions. During the Dark Times the Ministry of Currents maintained a sealed cache of Storm-Orbs in the Silent Clouds that allowed the Confederacy's leadership to coordinate without atmospheric relay infrastructure. A Storm-Orb gifted to an outsider is considered a mark of significant trust, and such gifts have historically preceded major treaty negotiations with Talamhari and the Order of the Starlight. Counterfeit Storm-Orbs produced by ground-world artificers have occasionally appeared in trade markets; they lack the interior inscription and are prone to catastrophic failure under use.

Powers & Abilities

  • Focused lightning discharge, releasing stored storm-energy as a directed bolt of electrical force
  • Wind-shield generation, projecting a compressed air barrier capable of deflecting blade strikes and arrows
  • Storm sensing, the orb brightens and vibrates in the presence of approaching storms or aerial magical activity
  • Aeromancy amplification, acting as a focus point that reduces the effort required for advanced storm-summoning rites
  • Network relay, clusters of Storm-Orbs positioned at altitude can triangulate and broadcast Wind-Glyph messages across the Confederacy

Curse or Drawback

A Storm-Orb kept dormant for more than one year without periodic energy cycling will begin drawing atmospheric moisture inward, creating a local cold-snap. If neglected beyond two years the compression seal fails and the orb implodes, pulling nearby air with dangerous force. An orb depleted beyond its safe discharge threshold shatters outward in a spray of super-heated sky-glass shards.
