Overview

Dune Viper belongs to apex predator in the Landorya bestiary. Its usual habitat is Dune Vipers inhabit the deep, uninhabited dune seas between oasis-khanates, particularly in areas of shifting sand above buried ruins where the residual magical energy of ancient sites may attract them.. The Dune Viper is one of the most feared natural dangers in the Whispering Sands, representing a constant occupational hazard for Desert Scholars conducting field excavations and… Key abilities include Arcane-sense pits, detects active Sand-Weave magic within a fifty-foot radius, making it acutely dangerous to Sand-Mancers in the field, Subsurface ambush, moves completely beneath the sand surface for short distances, striking from below without warning, and Paralytic venom, injects a toxin that causes progressive muscular paralysis lasting several hours.

Appearance

A sinuous serpent between four and seven feet in length, its scales shifting between pale bone-white and deep ochre in a pattern that renders it virtually invisible against sun-bleached sand. Its triangular head bears two faintly luminescent pits beneath its eyes, not heat-sensing organs as in common vipers, but arcane-sensitive organs that respond to the presence of Sand-Weave energy.

Temperament

Dune Vipers are solitary, calculating ambush hunters with a near-supernatural patience, capable of lying buried and motionless beneath the sand for days waiting for prey. They show no fear of humans and have been observed deliberately targeting Sand-Mancers over mundane travelers, possibly because active magic acts as an irritant to their arcane-sensitive pits.

Abilities

  • Arcane-sense pits, detects active Sand-Weave magic within a fifty-foot radius, making it acutely dangerous to Sand-Mancers in the field
  • Subsurface ambush, moves completely beneath the sand surface for short distances, striking from below without warning
  • Paralytic venom, injects a toxin that causes progressive muscular paralysis lasting several hours
  • Thermal camouflage, body temperature adjusts to match ambient sand, making it nearly invisible to magical aura detection

Lore

Candidates undertaking the Desert Walk, the second stage of the Trial of the Dunes, are considered to have proven exceptional composure if they encounter and evade a Dune Viper without resorting to Sand-Weave magic, as the creature's arcane-sense pits make magic use a double-edged tool in such encounters. At least two Grand Scribes in recorded history are said to have died to Dune Viper strikes during early-career field expeditions, and their names are inscribed on a memorial plaque in Sahar-Al-Mutaqaddim titled The Venom of Ignorance Reminds Us to Walk Humbly. The Shimmering Isles are known to import small quantities of refined Dune Viper venom-compound for surgical use.

Role in the World

The Dune Viper is one of the most feared natural dangers in the Whispering Sands, representing a constant occupational hazard for Desert Scholars conducting field excavations and Desert Walks. Its venom, however, is a prized alchemical ingredient: properly extracted, it forms the basis of several anesthetic compounds used by Scholar physicians and is a controlled substance regulated by the Ministry of Sand-Weave.
