Crystal Serpent belongs to sacred creature in the Landorya bestiary. Its usual habitat is Crystal Serpents are found almost exclusively in the Crystal Dunes, in areas of high quartz concentration where their food source is most abundant. They are rarely seen in other parts of the Whispering Sands. Population surveys conducted by the ecological monitoring team estimate between three hundred and four hundred individuals in the full extent of the Crystal Dunes, distributed across the region in loose, overlapping territories.. A slender, elegant serpent averaging two metres in length whose scales are translucent, ranging from glassy near-clear to a faint quartz-pink depending on the density of magical energy in the surrounding sand. In direct sunlight the body refracts light in prismatic patterns, making the serpent appear to flicker between visibility and invisibility as it moves across the Crystal Dunes. The eyes are faceted rather than smooth, reflecting the crystalline nature of the creature's cellular structure, and glow with a faint internal luminescence on moonless nights.

Crystal Serpents are unhurried, self-possessed animals with no interest in conflict. They will retreat from loud noise or sudden movement and show no territorial aggression toward humans who approach calmly and at an appropriate distance. Scholars who work in the Crystal Dunes regularly report that resident serpents become habituated to a familiar individual within a few visits, moving closer over time and sometimes investigating equipment with what appears to be genuine curiosity. Their relationship with the Desert Scholar order has been one of mutual accommodation for so many generations that some researchers have begun formally studying whether the serpents have developed behavioural adaptations specifically in response to Scholar presence.

Scholar religious tradition holds that the Crystal Serpents were the first creatures to inhabit the Whispering Sands after the great desiccation, arriving from somewhere unknown and seeding the desert with the resonance patterns that made it suitable for Sand-Weave practice.
