Lava Worms

Lava Worms belongs to megafauna in the Landorya bestiary. Its usual habitat is Lava Worms inhabit the deep volcanic rock beneath the Pyraxis Range and the surrounding highlands, occasionally surfacing or breaking through into existing tunnel networks when following mineral deposits. They are attracted to the heat gradients of active lava flows and are most commonly encountered in areas of recent volcanic activity where fresh mineral concentration is highest.. Lava Worms are a significant geological force in Drakon, their tunneling creating natural passages through volcanic rock that Drakonians have discovered and utilized for centuries… Key abilities include Tunneling through solid volcanic rock at speeds sufficient to travel several kilometers in a day through porous basalt, Extreme heat tolerance, capable of traversing lava-adjacent environments that would be lethal to almost any other creature, and Seismic sensitivity: detection of vibration patterns through ground contact, making them nearly impossible to approach without triggering a response.

Lava Worms are enormous annelid-like creatures of extraordinary size, the largest individuals exceeding thirty meters in length and several meters in diameter, encased in heat-resistant chitin plating that has been fused at extreme temperatures into a near-metallic exterior of dark reddish-black. Their anterior end is dominated by a wide drilling aperture ringed with hardened mineral teeth capable of grinding through solid volcanic rock, and their bodies emit a significant heat signature visible without thermal vision as a shimmering distortion above ground when a large specimen is tunneling below. They are eyeless, navigating entirely by seismic vibration and chemical detection of mineral concentrations.

Lava Worms demonstrate no complex social behavior, operating as solitary burrowers driven primarily by mineral-seeking instincts. They are not aggressive toward non-prey organisms and will generally divert their tunnel path away from large heat signatures that do not resemble their mineral targets. However, when cornered or directly interfered with, they respond with the full force of their drilling apparatus, which is formidable.

Drakonian mining operations have a long and occasionally catastrophic history of encountering Lava Worms unexpectedly. The most famous incident, still referenced in Ministry of the Forge safety protocols, involved an expedition in the Ashen Barrens that broke through the wall of a lava tube directly into a Lava Worm nest, triggering simultaneous surface emergence of seven adults through the softened lava crust above. Stone Warden units were dispatched to manage the situation; it took three days and three bonded earth dragons to redirect the worms away from Ashveil Outpost. The Ministry subsequently established mandatory worm-survey requirements before any new mining operation is approved.
