Flame-Moths belongs to companion in the Landorya bestiary. Its usual habitat is The volcanic environments of the Fire Kingdom's Pyroclastic Expanse, concentrated most densely around the Inferno Spire's forge-district and the secondary volcanic vents where Flame-Lily colonies grow. They do not migrate and do not survive outside elemental fire environments for more than a few days, making them exclusively Fire Kingdom residents.. Flame-Moths are palm-sized bioluminescent insects whose wings are translucent membranes threaded with channels of plasma-derived luminescence that shifts through the full spectrum of fire colours from deep crimson at the wing-base to pale gold at the tips, producing a constant soft glow intense enough to read by in the magma-adjacent darkness of the Fire Kingdom. Their bodies are covered in heat-resistant scales of a deep obsidian-black that absorb radiant heat without transferring it, enabling them to rest on magma surfaces without harm. Their antennae are longer than their body length, finely branched, and sensitive to the chemical signatures of plasma fields, allowing them to navigate by elemental sense rather than vision in the volcanic smoke-choked environments they inhabit. Their eyes are compound and multifaceted, gleaming copper-orange, adapted to perceive thermal radiation in detail.

Flame-Moths are curious and socially oriented, drawn to sources of elemental fire energy including the forges and active volcanic surfaces of the Fire Kingdom, but also uniquely attentive to the emotional states of their bonded Flame-Smiths. They become agitated and produce warning-intensity ember-trails when their bond-partner is in danger, a response Flame-Smiths learn to read as a survival tool in environments where their own senses may be overwhelmed by heat and volcanic noise.

Flame-Smith tradition holds that a Flame-Moth chooses its bond-partner rather than the reverse: the insect appears unbidden at the forge-bench of a new apprentice Flame-Smith and begins producing ember-trails in their vicinity before any formal bonding has occurred, apparently having assessed the match as suitable on its own terms. Smiths whose Moths chose them describe the relationship as the most honest working partnership of their lives, because a Moth that thinks you are making a dangerous decision will simply refuse to guide you there and wait at a safe distance until you reconsider.
