Appearance

A great bird of prey roughly the size of a large eagle, with plumage of deep charcoal and frost-white that shifts pattern subtly depending on the angle of light, as though its feathers are etched with living runes. Its eyes are solid silver, expressionless to outsiders, but Frostborn Runecrafters claim to see entire messages written within their depths.

Temperament

Aloof and inscrutable, the Runewing does not bond easily, and many Frostborn Runecrafters spend years earning the attention of even one. Once a bond is formed, however, it is considered unbreakable, the bird becomes a silent partner in all magical workings.

Abilities

  • Innate connection to Runecraft, capable of activating dormant runes inscribed on objects or structures nearby
  • Flight in absolute silence regardless of wind conditions
  • Vision that penetrates blizzard conditions, fog, and magical obscurement
  • Ability to carry and retain a single spoken message, replaying it in the recipient's mind upon landing
  • Feathers that, when shed naturally, can be used as potent Runecraft components

Lore

It is said among the Frostborn that the Runewings were once spirits of the ice given feathered form so they could carry the language of the old runes across the vast silence of the Wastes. Frostborn oral tradition holds that the great Runecrafter Solvara the Pale was guided by a Runewing familiar to discover the Icebound Codex, the oldest collection of Frostborn runes. Diplomats from civilizations south of the Northern Borders of Landorya are often unnerved by the birds, claiming they feel watched and judged. A Runecrafter whose Runewing abandons them is considered to have lost the favor of the ice spirits, a social and spiritual crisis of enormous magnitude.

Role in the World

The Runewing serves as both familiar and living tool for Frostborn Runecrafters, acting as messenger, scout, and magical catalyst. The Frostborn consider these birds to be gifts of the North Wind, and their presence near a settlement is seen as an omen of important tidings or magical significance.
