Its usual habitat is They roost in the high stone escarpments of the Stone-scarred Badlands but range widely across all Azarian biomes, drawn wherever magical waste or alchemical pollution accumulates.. Appearance

A vast, broad-winged scavenger with a wingspan exceeding three meters, its primary feathers edged in a dull grey mineralized keratin that clatters faintly when the bird settles its wings like folding shields. Its naked head is a deep, burnished crimson, and its eyes are milky white, seemingly sightless, yet unerringly precise.

Temperament

Stone-winged Vultures are aloof and utterly indifferent to creatures they do not perceive as food or threat, circling contaminated areas with a patience that borders on the meditative. They are not aggressive unless cornered, at which point their stone-edged wings become formidable weapons.

Abilities

  • Digests magical waste and toxic alchemical byproducts without harm
  • Passive purification of ambient mana fields through metabolic processing
  • Keen supernatural sense for locating ley-line impurities and magical contamination
  • Mineralized wing-edges capable of deflecting minor arcane projectiles

Lore

The Green Covenant that protects Stone-winged Vultures was passed following the Gleamspire Contamination of the Sixth Imperial Century, when unlicensed alchemical dumping in Gleamspire Province wiped out a local vulture colony and triggered a catastrophic ley-line defilement that rendered three townships uninhabitable for a generation. Eco-Rangers who work alongside these birds report that they appear to recognize individual rangers over years of repeated contact, occasionally leading them to contamination sites as though deliberately seeking assistance. Gnomish naturalists who visited El'goroth's ecological institute once proposed that Stone-winged Vultures may be a form of engineered creature, designed long ago by an unknown civilization to serve as a living filtration system, a theory Azarian scholars find compelling but cannot yet prove.

Role in the World

Among Humans of the Empire of Azaria, Stone-winged Vultures are ecologically indispensable scavengers of magical waste, and their protected status under the Green Covenant reflects the empire's scientific understanding that without them, unchecked alchemical runoff would corrode the ley-line network that powers Azarian civilization.
