Appearance

A medium-length serpent rarely exceeding a meter, its scales patterned in interlocking bands of pale straw yellow and shadow grey that render it nearly invisible against dry plains grasses and the dust of well-worn caravan tracks. Its flat, spade-shaped head is slightly darker than its body, and its eyes are a cold, opaque silver.

Temperament

Shade Vipers are neither aggressive nor curious, they are coldly opportunistic, striking only when they perceive themselves cornered or threatened underfoot. Their patience is extraordinary; they have been observed holding perfectly still for hours while caravans pass nearby.

Lore

The Grassland Shade Viper is responsible for more injuries within Nomadic caravans than any other creature of the plains, particularly during dry seasons when the snakes congregate near water sources also used by the herds. Nomadic children are taught from infancy to stamp their feet when walking through tall grass, a practice that gives the viper enough vibration warning to flee rather than strike. Despite its danger, the Nomads of Aurora do not consider the Shade Viper an enemy, their oral traditions frame it as a reminder that the plains demand constant awareness, and a caravan that grows complacent invites misfortune. Some tribes keep dried Shade Viper scales as talismans, believing they grant the wearer the serpent's gift of patience and stillness.

Role in the World

The Grassland Shade Viper is a natural check on the rodent and small animal populations of the Aurora Plains, helping preserve the grasslands that the Nomads of Aurora depend upon for grazing. Nomadic healers have also developed antivenom preparations from their venom, a knowledge carefully passed down through oral tradition.
