Appearance

A sleek, large bird of prey with a wingspan stretching nearly two meters, its feathers a stunning gradient of amber gold along the back and pale silver-white on the underside, as though it carries the colors of dawn on its wings. Its piercing amber eyes, strikingly similar in color to those of the Nomads who bond with it, can track movement from extraordinary heights.

Temperament

Wind-Hawks are proud and aloof with strangers, tolerating no unfamiliar hand without a sharp rebuke. With their bonded handlers they are remarkably expressive, communicating mood and observation through subtle shifts of feather and call.

  • Ability to navigate back to a specific caravan across vast featureless terrain
  • Silent flight for ambush-style hunting of plains prey

Lore

Nomadic seers interpret the flight patterns of Wind-Hawks as omens, and a hawk that circles a caravan three times without landing is considered a warning of danger ahead. The bond between a Nomad and their first Wind-Hawk is considered a rite of passage, and young adults who succeed in calling and earning the trust of a wild hawk earn significant standing in their tribe. It is whispered among traders of other Landoryan civilizations that Wind-Hawk feathers carry a faint trace of the aurora's light, and unscrupulous collectors have been known to attempt theft from Nomadic camps, an offense the Nomads treat with exceptional severity. Shamans of the confederation claim the hawks were once spirits of the sky given feathers and bone so that the Nomads would never be blind to what lay beyond the horizon.

Role in the World

The Nomads of Aurora train Wind-Hawks as scouts and messengers, using them to relay information between distant caravans and to survey terrain ahead of the tribe's movement. Their feathers are also among the most prized adornments woven into Nomadic braids.
