Appearance
An Ash-Wyrm is a colossal, serpentine dragon whose scales shift between charcoal black and molten orange, glowing faintly at every joint as if magma courses just beneath its skin. Its maw is ringed with volcanic glass teeth, and a corona of ash and cinder perpetually drifts from its spine like smoke from a restless caldera.
Temperament
Ash-Wyrms are ancient and imperious, moving with the slow, inevitable patience of a volcanic tide. They are not aggressive by nature, but their territorial wrath, when roused, is indistinguishable from a natural eruption.
Abilities
- • Eruption Breath, exhales a sustained torrent of superheated magma
- • Tremor Coil, its movement through underground tunnels triggers localized seismic tremors
- • Ashveil Shroud, can engulf itself in a blinding cloud of volcanic ash for concealment
- • Magma Communion, senses changes in subterranean lava pressure instinctively
- • Pyrathon's Resilience, virtually impervious to fire, heat, and molten rock
Lore
Pyrakian high-pyromancers believed that each Ash-Wyrm was a shard of Pyrathon's consciousness made flesh, and that harming one would cause the Scorching Spine itself to convulse in mourning. The Drakonian bond with true dragons is directly descended from Pyrakian rituals of Ash-Wyrm veneration conducted at the Obsidian Citadel. Neighboring lowland civilizations feared these creatures as omens of destruction, unaware that the Pyrakians' careful stewardship kept the wyrms dormant. It is said that the last living Ash-Wyrm still sleeps beneath Ignis Aeterna, and that the day it wakes unannounced will mark the end of the Flame-Watch's vigilance.
Role in the World
Ash-Wyrms are the apex spiritual and ecological anchor of the Pyrakian world, revered as the living embodiment of the god Pyrathon's power. For the Pyrakians, venerating and coexisting with these creatures was the very foundation of the Dragonsoul Pact tradition that their Drakonian heirs still uphold today.
