Appearance
A Cinder-Hound is a muscular, wolf-sized canine with short, coarse fur the color of cooling basalt, threaded through with faint ember-red veins that glow warmly in darkness. Its eyes burn a steady amber, and its breath carries a faint curl of smoke, most visible in the cool hours before dawn.
Temperament
Cinder-Hounds are fiercely loyal to their Pyrakian handlers, bonding deeply with a single master over years of shared patrol. Around strangers or perceived threats they are alert and intimidating, though rarely hostile without provocation.
Abilities
- • Fire Resistance, thick, heat-adapted fur and skin repel open flame and radiant heat
- • Ember Tracking, can follow heat signatures and ash-scent trails across cooled lava fields
- • Volcanic Alarm, vocalizes a distinctive howl when sensing dangerous magma pressure shifts
- • Herding Instinct, naturally coordinates in packs to drive or contain other volcanic fauna
Lore
Pyrakian legend holds that the first Cinder-Hound was born from a she-wolf that leapt through a sacred flame to save her pups from a lava flow, emerging transformed and fire-blessed. Packs of feral Cinder-Hounds have occasionally been observed running ahead of major eruptions, and Pyrakian land-stewards treated their agitation as one of the most reliable early-warning signs available. Allied lowland realms that received Pyrakian flame-brigades sometimes reported the unnerving sight of Cinder-Hounds patrolling the cauterized plague-borders, undisturbed by smoldering ground. Their selective breeding over centuries is considered one of the Pyrakians' most celebrated feats of animal husbandry.
Role in the World
Cinder-Hounds served the Pyrakians as tireless patrol animals and herders on the volcanic plains, guarding settlement perimeters and driving Lava-Turtles and other fauna away from active lava channels. The Drakonian Dragon Guard continues to breed and train Cinder-Hounds as scouting companions during continental crisis deployments.
