The Lava-Turtle is a massive, slow-moving reptile the size of a draft horse, its domed shell a patchwork of interlocking plates in deep obsidian black and rust-red, textured like cooled pahoehoe lava. Its skin is thick and leathery, heat-blotched in charcoal and ochre, and its small, patient eyes sit deep within a broad armored head.

Lava-Turtles are profoundly placid and nearly unflappable, moving through even active volcanic terrain with unhurried indifference. They are not aggressive and submit readily to handling, making them easy to manage despite their great size.

Pyrakian shell-smiths considered the voluntary shedding of a Lava-Turtle's plate, rather than slaughter, to be the only honorable method of harvest, codified in the Ashen Code as a mark of a civilization that takes only what the flame freely offers. Armor fashioned from Lava-Turtle shell was considered sacred enough to be interred with its wearer, and several complete suits have been excavated from Pyrakian tomb-vaults beneath the Scorching Spine. Drakonian smiths at Forgepeak still prize ancient Lava-Turtle plate above all other heat-resistant materials, and live specimens are protected as a cultural heritage species. Lowland allies who received Pyrakian flame-brigades noted with awe that the soldiers' remarkable endurance in fire-ravaged terrain owed much to the distinctive dark-shelled armor they wore.
