The Shimmering Wisp appears as a drifting orb of pale silver-green light, no larger than a cupped hand, trailing gossamer threads of luminescence that fade slowly behind it like the tail of a miniature comet. Up close, those with elvish sight claim to see within the light a tiny, vaguely humanoid shape curled in peaceful repose, its features as fine as a carved seed.

Shimmering Wisps are playful and curious, drawn to music and laughter, and are frequently found bobbing around Sylvan Elf settlements at night as though attending their gatherings. They are fiercely loyal to those they attach to, but mercurial and impossible to command, they serve the forest's will first and individual will second.

The Sylvan Elves believe that Shimmering Wisps are the lingering spirits of elves who loved the forest so deeply that they could not bear to leave it after death, choosing instead to remain as gentle, luminous guardians. It is considered deeply taboo to attempt to capture or extinguish a wisp, and the few accounts of outsiders doing so describe the entire forest responding with an immediate and inexplicable storm of wind and sound. Travelers from neighboring civilizations who have been lost in the Eldris Forest sometimes return to their homes speaking of strange lights that guided them safely to the forest's edge, the Sylvan Elves smile knowingly at such accounts. During the annual Festival of Ancestors, wisps gather in numbers so great that the canopy glows like a second sky, and Lorekeepers enter trance states to commune with these clustered spirits.
