The Starwing Owl is a strikingly large nocturnal bird, its wingspan spanning nearly six feet, with plumage the deep blue-black of a clear winter sky dusted with hundreds of tiny white and silver speckles that eerily mirror actual star constellations. Its face is a perfect white disc framed by midnight feathers, and its eyes are enormous orbs of pale silver that glow with a cold, celestial light in darkness.

The Starwing Owl is solemn, discerning, and deeply selective in its bonds, choosing a single Sylvan Elf companion over the course of its centuries-long life and serving as that elf's eyes in the dark. It is not affectionate in any conventional sense but is devoted with an intensity that borders on the sacred, and it mourns visibly if its bonded elf dies before it.

It is said that the legendary archer Thalion Swiftarrow was guided by a Starwing Owl on his most celebrated journey, the bird flying ahead of him through moonless nights across terrain no elf had charted before. Sylvan Elf lore holds that when a Starwing Owl circles a tree-home three times at midnight and calls once, a great change is coming, and that this omen has never once been wrong in recorded elvish history. Scholars from other civilizations prize shed Starwing feathers enormously for their reputed capacity to record visions, though acquiring them is nearly impossible without the blessing of the Sylvan Elves, who guard the nesting sites carefully. When a bonded Lorekeeper passes into death, the elf's Starwing Owl is said to fly straight upward until it vanishes among the actual stars, never to be seen again.
