Its usual habitat is They inhabit gemstone deposits in crystal caverns and the Echoing Halls, emerging only to bond with a geomancer of sufficient attunement.. Appearance

An Ore-Sprite appears as a fist-sized mote of shifting light encased within a raw gemstone, emerald, garnet, or deep tourmaline, its inner glow pulsing in rhythm with the mineral veins surrounding it. When roused, it partially extrudes a wispy, vaguely humanoid form of crystalline light that crackles with static and smells faintly of hot copper.

Temperament

Ore-Sprites are inquisitive and fiercely loyal to their bonded geomancer, flitting restlessly about them like an anxious lantern. They grow agitated near corrupted or over-mined rock and will refuse to enter spaces where the Balance of the Bedrock has been severely violated.

Abilities

  • Amplifies bonded geomancer's ability to sense mineral deposits and tectonic stress
  • Vibrates in warning when structural collapse or seismic shift is imminent
  • Can phase through rock to scout ahead in tunnels
  • Emits a focused beam of mineral-light to illuminate ore veins in darkness

Lore

The bonding ritual between a geomancer and an Ore-Sprite, called the Deepening, required the candidate to spend three days alone in unlit crystal caverns, meditating until a Sprite chose them of its own accord, a Sprite that was sought rather than awaited was said to bring misfortune. Frostborn clan shamans of the Ice-Stone Sanctuaries in the north describe Ore-Sprites that have taken up residence in blue glacier-quartz, their cold-light variant believed to sense ice-tectonic stress in addition to rock. Ancient lore warns that if a bonded geomancer dies violently, their Sprite retreats permanently into stone and becomes an inert inclusion, a 'grief-gem', mourned and buried with full rite.

Role in the World

Ore-Sprites served as the living instruments of Talamhari senior geomancers, deepening their earth-sense and acting as early-warning systems against collapses and quakes, a tradition still maintained in the Dwarven Holds, where a geomancer without a bonded Sprite is considered half-blind.
