Geography

The Healing Houses occupy a gently contoured island whose natural rock has been shaped over centuries into a series of broad, curved terraces. The structures are single-storey and open-sided, built to allow constant air circulation without creating the wind-driven chill of exposed platforms. Recovery gardens on the upper terrace are planted with sky-lichen varieties known to have alchemical medicinal properties, harvested from Caelum's island undersides and cultivated here in controlled conditions.

Climate

The Healing Houses are one of few locations in Caelum where deliberate weather management is applied for human comfort rather than agricultural necessity. A small aeromantic team maintains a persistent mild-pressure zone over the island that reduces wind intensity to a gentle, steady circulation, supporting patient recovery without the strain of exposure to full high-altitude conditions. The result is an island that feels softer than its neighbours, a quality that Aeriel patients and visitors note with relief and that ground-dwelling visitors find the most bearable part of any stay in Caelum.

History

The Healing Houses were established within a generation of the Shattered Skies catastrophe, when the need for dedicated medical facilities became acute in the chaotic rebuilding of Caelum. Their early mandate was almost entirely emergency care. Over centuries, as Caelum stabilised, the research function grew to match the clinical one, and the Healing Houses became the primary institution for understanding how Aeriel physiology adapts — and sometimes fails to adapt — to sustained high-altitude life, including the study of Luminesce dysregulation, hollow-bone stress fractures, and the rare but devastating condition of aeromantic sensitivity overload.

Legend & Lore

It is said that the Healing Houses were placed on their particular island because a wounded Stormhawk chose to land and recover there in the days immediately after the Shattered Skies — that the bird's instinct for a safe, sheltered place marked the site as one with particular restorative properties. Whether or not the legend is true, the island does show an unusually stable magical field, and Aeriel healers have never offered a technical explanation for why instruments work more reliably there than on any comparable island.

Life & Culture

The Healing Houses maintain a working atmosphere that is calm without being hushed, purposeful without being hurried — a balance difficult to achieve and one that new practitioners are taught explicitly. Seraphina Light-Healer moves between the clinical and research wings several times daily, conducting patient rounds in the morning and laboratory work in the afternoon. Her protected discovery has altered the social atmosphere of the Houses subtly but perceptibly: there is a careful watchfulness among the senior staff, a tendency to close doors before conversations, that was not present in earlier generations.
