Geography

Situated at the heart of Sahar-Al-Mutaqaddim, the Great Library is a multi-tiered complex carved partly into the bedrock beneath the oasis and partly rising in crystalline towers above the city skyline. Its lower vaults are sealed chambers accessible only to senior Scholars, while upper reading halls open to filtered sunlight through star-cut crystal panes.

Climate

Internally climate-controlled through Sand-Weave wards and Thermal-Arcane energy drawn from the Solar-Sand Cells, keeping temperature and humidity stable regardless of the desert conditions outside.

History

The Great Library was founded alongside the city of Sahar-Al-Mutaqaddim as the physical embodiment of the Desert Scholars' core mission: to preserve the world's memory. It has absorbed records from every civilization the Scholars have encountered, including archived treaties with the Celestial Order, Frostborn chronicles, and Eldorian discoveries that would otherwise have been suppressed or lost. It remains the single most complete repository of historical and arcane knowledge in Landorya.

Legend & Lore

It is whispered among the senior Scholars that the lowest sealed vault, designated simply as the Ninth Chamber, contains not books or crystals, but a living memory: the consciousness of a long-dead archivist who refused to let his knowledge perish and bound his mind into the bedrock itself. On certain moonless nights, novices pressed against the vault door claim to hear a slow, rhythmic murmuring in no known tongue, as if the stone itself were reciting passages from texts that no longer exist anywhere above ground. Some believe the Ninth Chamber is the true founding artifact of the Library, older even than the city above it, and that the Desert Scholars merely built their institution around something they did not fully understand. The Ministry of Archives neither confirms nor denies that the Ninth Chamber's sealing ward has never once required renewal in all the centuries since the Library's founding.

Life & Culture

Each dawn, the reading halls fill with amber light filtered through star-cut crystal panes, and the soft hum of Solar-Sand Cells resonates through the walls as anti-decay wards refresh themselves, a sound Scholars call the "Morning Breath." Senior Archivists descend by oil-lit lifts into the lower vaults to rotate Memory Crystals, recalibrate preservation wards, and transcribe deteriorating fragments before they are lost, a meticulous ritual governed by a strict rotation schedule etched in copper on the entrance colonnade. Upper hall novices spend their days cross-referencing star charts against oral histories, debating the provenance of Eldorian manuscripts, and practicing the precise breath-control technique required to handle loose Memory Crystal dust without inhaling encoded recollections by accident. Every seventh evening, the Grand Reading, a public recitation in the uppermost hall, opens the Library's lesser collections to citizens, with a chosen Scholar reading aloud from a newly catalogued text as scribes below copy the words in real time, ensuring no single voice ever holds knowledge alone.
