Geography
The Outer Dunes are defined by their near-total absence of oases, their towering and ever-shifting dune formations, and the frequency of catastrophic sandstorms that can bury landmarks overnight. Beneath the surface, unexcavated ruins and deep Sand-Weave currents are thought to be especially concentrated here.
Climate
Extreme even by the standards of the Whispering Sands, heat during the day reaches lethal levels without magical protection, while nights bring frost across the dune crests. Sandstorms here are more frequent, more powerful, and far less predictable than near the settled oases.

History
The Outer Dunes have served as the Desert Scholars' place of ultimate trial and ultimate punishment since the early days of the order. The Desert Walk stage of the Trial of the Dunes sends candidates alone into this terrain for three days, a rite that has claimed lives and forged legends in equal measure. As a judicial sentence, exile to the Outer Dunes is the harshest punishment the Court of Scholars can impose short of permanent Memory-Rewrite. No formal treaties govern this region, and even the most adventurous emissaries from the Frostborn or Nomads of Aurora are strongly discouraged from venturing here without a Desert Scholar escort.
Legend & Lore
It is whispered among Desert Scholars that the Outer Dunes were once a vast city of the First Weavers, those who shaped the original Sand-Weave, and that the cataclysmic storms which buried it were not nature's work but the city's own defense against those who sought to claim its power. Scholars claim that on the third night of the Desert Walk, initiates sometimes hear voices rising from beneath the sand, reciting incantations in a tongue that predates all known Desert Script. Those who return report the same haunting detail: the dunes themselves seem to shift with deliberate intent, forming and dissolving passages as if guiding, or testing, whoever walks among them. The most chilling rumor holds that not all who perish during the Trial of the Dunes truly die; some, it is said, are simply swallowed and kept, preserved within the deep Sand-Weave currents like insects in amber, still dreaming.
Life & Culture
Daily life in the Outer Dunes does not exist in any settled sense, there are no villages, no markets, no hearths lit at dusk. The only souls who move through this region with any regularity are Trial candidates enduring their three-day Desert Walk, solitary exiles cast out by the Court of Scholars, and the rare escort-guides tasked with leading foreign emissaries to the border and no further. Those guides adhere to strict ritual protocols: they walk at dawn and dusk when the Sand-Weave currents run calmer, they do not speak above a murmur lest a storm be drawn by sound, and they mark their path with carved bone stakes that are always retrieved before departing, leaving no trace that could anchor a return. For the Trial candidates, survival itself is the only ritual: rationing water drawn from deep Sand-Weave condensation, reading the dune formations for storm-sign, and enduring the profound, identity-stripping silence that the Desert Scholars believe strips away everything false and leaves only what is worthy.
