The Institute of Natural Philosophy was established during the Age of Enlightenment as a deliberate counterpart to the more tradition-oriented Grand Library: where the Library preserved the accumulated knowledge of civilization, the Institute was charged with pushing that knowledge forward through organized inquiry. Eldorian contributions to its founding were primarily methodological, introducing the systematic ecological observation protocols developed by Eldorian Druid Wardens and proposing the integration of magical and natural science as a unified discipline rather than two separate fields. Lady Mirabelle Starchild, an Eldorian scholar-druid of the previous century, is credited with the theoretical framework for understanding seasonal aura shifts that transformed the Institute's aura research from intuition-based observation to rigorous ecological science.

The Institute keeps a peculiar institutional tradition: any researcher who believes they have achieved a genuinely new understanding of how magical and natural forces interact must present their work to the full faculty in a session called the Thornwood Test — named after a famous early dispute in which an Eldorian fellow's claim to have mapped the root network of a living forest using ambient aura resonance was challenged for two full days before being vindicated by experimental replication. The session is adversarial by design, and the Eldorian fellows who participate in it are considered among its most formidable intellectual opponents.
