Geography
Point Perilous is a narrow rocky headland extending north from one of the outer islands into the direct path of both converging currents. The lighthouse stands at the headland's tip, built on a basalt formation that requires skilled sailors even to approach in calm weather. A small keeper's cottage is built into the lighthouse's base, with a signal fire platform accessible from the light room for backup communication during magical interference events.
Climate
Point Perilous experiences the most extreme weather conditions in the archipelago, exposed fully to the Deepcold Current from the north and to the warm turbulence where it meets the Warm Drift. Fog is frequent, winds are violent and directionally unpredictable, and winter storms can isolate the lighthouse for weeks at a time. Aurora Tidesinger maintains supply stores for a season of isolation as standard practice.
Points of Interest
- 📍 The Main Light — a magically enhanced beacon whose range of twenty leagues far exceeds any conventional lighthouse in Landorya
- 📍 The Signal Log — Aurora's meticulous record of anomalous signals from the open ocean, kept in a locked cabinet in the keeper's cottage
- 📍 The Convergence Observation Deck — a stone platform at the headland's edge from which the current collision is visible as a literal seam in the water's surface
- 📍 Horace Deepwater's Outer Spirit Chapel — the small shrine at Point Perilous maintained by the retired fisherman who serves as shrine-keeper for the kelp-sprites and current-runners
History
The site at Point Perilous has been marked by some form of signal light since the earliest generations of Islander seafaring, when the danger of the current convergence zone was among the first navigational hazards the Ocean's Children would have encountered when venturing north. The current lighthouse structure is Aurora Tidesinger's family's construction, built three generations before her by her great-grandmother after a particularly devastating shipping season. The family has kept the light continuously since, and Aurora represents the tradition's most recent and dedicated keeper. Her fifteen-year tenure has been marked by the introduction of several technical improvements to the light mechanism and, in the past year, by her documented observation of apparently intelligent light-signals originating from the open ocean beyond the convergence zone.
Legend & Lore
The local legend of Point Perilous describes a light that appeared before the Tidesinger family built the lighthouse — maintained by an unnamed figure who sailors said appeared to be made of water herself. Locals hold this figure was a Nereid who held the keeper's post until a human family was ready to take it over. Aurora Tidesinger, when asked about this story, does not confirm or deny it. She looks at the horizon and says that the light does not judge who it saves. The mysterious signals she has been observing have begun to generate their own secondary legend: that the intelligent source of those signals is the same Nereid, communicating from the deep to the keeper who maintained faith across fifteen years alone.
Life & Culture
Life at the Stormwatch Lighthouse is defined by solitude, duty, and an intimate knowledge of the sea in its most treacherous expression. Aurora Tidesinger rises before dawn to inspect the light mechanism and log the previous night's weather and navigational observations. She monitors the convergence zone through daylight hours, noting current behavior, migrating marine life, and the positions of any vessels attempting the passage. Her evenings are spent recording observations and, in recent months, attempting to decode the patterns in the signals she has been tracking. Supply vessels from the nearest outer island community visit monthly, bringing provisions and letters from the council and departing with Aurora's observational reports, which the Ministry of Trade and Maritime Affairs treats as primary intelligence for shipping safety advisories.
