Geography
The Gate occupies a clearing in the outer mist-territory at coordinates known to the diplomatic services of several other civilizations but carefully withheld from wider publication. Its position is marked by a pair of permanent standing stones inscribed with Sigil-Script that outsiders find themselves unable to fully parse, which serve as both navigational markers and as components of the ward system governing the clearing's perceptual environment.
Climate
The Gate clearing maintains the standard mist-lands climate — cool, damp, and frequently shrouded — though mist density is intentionally modulated by the Arcane Guardians on duty to provide variable visibility appropriate to the access tier of the visitor being received. Those arriving with genuine scholarly purpose consistently report the mists lightening as they approach; others find them thickening.

History
The Gate takes its name from Arevyn the Patient, a Conclave member of the civilization's middle historical era who argued against total closure of the mist-lands following an incursion attempt and designed the evaluated-access system the Gate implements. Before Arevyn's proposal, official access had been suspended for several centuries. The current system has operated with modifications for several hundred years and is considered one of the Mystaran civilization's more durable institutional compromises — resisted by isolationists, defended by the Emissary's office, and maintained through the balance between them.
Legend & Lore
It is said among the diplomatic corps of other civilizations that the Mist-Gate can sense the intentions of those who approach — that visitors carrying genuine scholarly purpose feel the mist thin slightly as they near the clearing, while those with ulterior motives find the path lengthening and the light dimming. The current Emissary, Caelen Mist-Tongue, neither confirms nor denies this when asked. The Arcane Guardians on duty are consistently observed to be already positioned before visitors announce themselves.
Life & Culture
The Gate is staffed continuously by rotating Arcane Guardians and diplomatic representatives from the Emissary's office. Formal visit requests require weeks of evaluation — background assessment via magical truth-sensing, correspondence with the Emissary through established channels, and Ministry of Arcana review of research purpose. Walk-in visitors are received politely and assessed. Those deemed to lack genuine purpose emerge from the mists hours or days later at a point far from where they intended, with a pleasant and entirely vague memory of having been helped by courteous people.
