Geography

The Citadel is built on a hardened lava plateau within the Scorching Spine, its concentric rings of obsidian walls separated by active lava-moat channels fed directly by the Lava-Sluice Network. Tiered forge-levels descend into the plateau's interior, replicating the caldera-city design of Ignis Aeterna on a fortress scale. Pyrosteel structural beams reinforce every archway and battlement.

Climate

The Citadel's elevated position on the lava plateau exposes it to the dry, ash-laden winds of the Scorching Spine, while the surrounding lava moats generate a constant low shimmer of radiant heat that discourages approach by the unprepared. Nights are cooler but never cold, the moats glowing amber in the darkness.

History

Originally constructed by the Pyrakians as a military and ceremonial stronghold, the Obsidian Citadel was maintained continuously through the civilization's decline and passed into the stewardship of the Drakonians, the dragon-kin heirs who trace their lineage directly to the Flame-Forged. The Drakonians upheld the Dragonsoul Pact tradition here and installed the Flame-Watch corps to monitor magma pressure across the caldera chain, preventing catastrophic eruptions from devastating neighboring lowlands including those of the Talamhari. The Citadel's architecture became the direct template for Drakonian city-building, its lava-moat defense and tiered forge-level design replicated throughout their realm.

Legend & Lore

It is whispered among the Drakonians that the Obsidian Citadel was not built by mortal hands alone, that the first Pyrakian Flame-Forgers called up a living river of lava and spoke the Dragonsoul Pact aloud into its flow, and the rock that cooled around their words became the Citadel's innermost wall. Pilgrims who press their palms against that oldest obsidian ring claim to feel syllables moving beneath the glass-dark stone, still warm, still murmuring after uncounted ages. A persistent rumor holds that one tier of the forge-levels was never excavated by the Drakonians, sealed not by cave-in but by deliberate choice, that something was entombed there at the Pyrakians' decline which must not be disturbed so long as the lava-moats run hot. The Flame-Watch captains neither confirm nor deny this; they say only that certain pressure readings from that quarter of the plateau are logged but never investigated.

Life & Culture

Life inside the Obsidian Citadel is governed by the cadence of the Lava-Sluice Network, its rhythmic groaning as channels are opened or throttled sets the hours of the day more reliably than any bell. Flame-Watch engineers walk the moat-bridges at each shift change, reading the color and viscosity of the lava flow with trained eyes, inscribing their observations into heat-pressed pyrosteel tablets that are carried by courier to the caldera monitoring posts along the Scorching Spine. Drakonian smiths occupy the tiered forge-levels below, working pyrosteel in heats that lowland foundries could never achieve, producing the structural reinforcements and ceremonial armaments that are traded, carefully, sparingly, to allied settlements. On the last night of each volcanic season, the Dragonsoul Pact rite is performed in the Citadel's central tier: drake-kin elders lower offerings of forged obsidian into the primary lava-moat channel, reaffirming the covenant between their bloodline and the mountain's fire.
