Magic Profile
- Nature
- Geothermal Runecraft is the engineering-arcane discipline of harnessing the deep-earth heat venting from the Iron Mountains' volcanic roots, channeling it through runic conduits and mechanically engineered networks to power Dwarven Holds and, by export, the settlements of allied surface peoples. It sits at the boundary between magic and science, the runes direct and stabilize flows of thermal energy that engineering alone could never safely contain.

Key Aspects
0
Pressurized steam network engineering pioneered by the Engineers Guild's Steam Engineers chapter
1
Runic thermal conduits, glyphs that stabilize and direct geothermal flows through stone channels
2
Geothermal Heat-Blocks, exportable solidified thermal units traded to surface allies
3
Mineral-rich hot spring water harvesting and trade at Deepwell Market
4
Deep-shaft excavation to tap new geothermal vents, practiced by the Deep Delvers Consortium
Practitioners
0
Steam Engineers of the Engineers Guild's specialized chapter
1
Rune-Masters maintaining the conduit glyph-lines across the Hold networks
2
Deep Delvers Consortium, controversial rapid-excavation specialists tapping new vents
3
Surface-trade engineers who manage the export of Heat-Blocks to Eldoria and Azaria
Limitations
The geothermal grid requires constant runic maintenance; degraded glyphs along a conduit line cause heat buildup that can breach tunnel walls or trigger localized eruptions. The network also cannot be extended indefinitely, the further the thermal energy travels from its volcanic source, the more runic amplification is required, making long-range surface exports enormously resource-intensive.
Common Applications
- ✦ Vent-Sealing Rune, an emergency glyph array used to cap a breached geothermal vent before it floods a tunnel with superheated steam
- ✦ Thermal Binding, a runic ritual that locks a measured flow of geothermal energy into a Heat-Block for stable surface export
- ✦ The Deep Breath, the rite performed before opening a new deep shaft, imploring the mountain's memory to permit the drilling without catastrophic blowback
- ✦ Steam-Ward Inscription, protective runes engraved into pressurized pipe-joints to prevent explosive steam failure in the Hold's ventilation districts
- ✦ Conduit Awakening, the ceremonial first activation of a new branch of the geothermal grid, requiring a master rune-smith and a Steam Engineer to synchronize the arcane and mechanical components
Cultural Significance
The geothermal grid is the most visible expression of Dwarven power to the outside world, it heats settlements across the northern half of Landorya and has made the Dwarves of the Iron Mountains indispensable to their surface neighbors. Within the Holds it is regarded as a sacred trust: to manage the mountain's heat responsibly is to honor the Celestials' original gift of forge-fire.
Lore
The Dwarves of the Iron Mountains speak of the geothermal grid not as a construction but as a covenant, an agreement with the mountain to take only what it freely offers and to seal away what it would keep. The first pressurized-steam networks were pioneered by the Engineers Guild of Baragorn, whose Steam Engineers chapter is credited with domesticating a power that had previously only ever erupted in destruction. When the Ember-Plague threatened the Holds in 210 AE, it was the combination of runic sealing and the still-young geothermal conduit system, diverted to carry volcanic pressure away from inhabited tunnels, that saved millions of lives. The Deepwell Market's thriving trade in mineral-rich hot spring water is a quieter legacy of that disaster: channels dug to relieve pressure became, in time, the foundation of a new economy.
