1

Runic Sealing, locking tunnels, doors, or vaults against intrusion or collapse

2

Runic Warding, defensive glyphs placed on passes, walls, and armor

3

Runic Counter-Charge, offensive runic arrays discharged against enemy forces

4

Rune-Masters of the Rune-Masters Guild

1

Master smiths of the Fire-Smiths Guild inscribing runic weapons and armor

2

Stone-Masons of the Stone-Masons Guild practicing Runic Masonry

3

Northern Hold craftworkers (Kragnir, Grimhall) who integrate runes deeply into daily life

Limitations

Each rune must be carved with absolute precision; a single errant stroke can corrupt or reverse the intended effect. The total runic load an object or structure can bear is finite, and overloading it risks catastrophic discharge, as the Arcane Overuse Crisis of 298 AE demonstrated.

Common Applications

  • The Rune of Awakening, the primordial glyph said to have breathed life into the first Dwarves, now used in the most sacred consecration rites
  • Runic Sealing, a layered array of binding glyphs that locks tunnels or chambers against collapse, breach, or volcanic ingress
  • Runic Counter-Charge, an offensive discharge of accumulated runic energy unleashed against a besieging force, first used to break the Drakonian Siege of Baragorn
  • Runic Bond, an enchanted contractual inscription that self-enforces terms of payment or agreement, voiding itself only upon fulfillment
  • Ward of the Iron Pass, a standing runic array placed across mountain corridors to repel trespassers and weather alike

Cultural Significance

Runic Magic is the heartbeat of Dwarven civilization, woven into currency, architecture, warfare, and governance. It is the defining point of division between the Northern Holds, which embrace deep runic integration into daily life, and the Southern Holds, which favor industrial methods, a tension born of the Great Schism that still shapes Council debates to this day.

Lore

According to the Chronicles of the Deep, the very first rune ever spoken was the Rune of Awakening, breathed into darkness by the Celestials to give life to the first Dwarf beneath the First Peak. The Dwarves of the Iron Mountains have since held that all Runic Magic is an echo of that primal act, each inscribed glyph a mortal attempt to repeat the Celestials' gift. Borgang the Ember-Plague of 210 AE, it was Runic Sealing alone that kept the volcanic fire from consuming the Holds, and the rune-masters who worked those seals are honored each year at the Festival of the Ever-Flame. The Arcane Overuse Crisis nearly destroyed what those heroes had saved, and the Rune-Law Codex established in its aftermath is now considered as sacred as any forge-oath.
