Key Aspects
0
Glaciation, the rapid freezing and shaping of water, moisture, or living tissue
1
Stormcalling, drawing down blizzards and directing howling arctic winds
2
Frost-sculpting, crafting precise, lasting structures of conjured ice
3
Cold-sense, reading the temperature and movement of air and water to perceive distant events
4
Shattering, the detonation of frozen matter with concussive, razor-edged force
Practitioners
0
Frostcallers, battle-mages who weaponise cold in open warfare
1
Glacier-shapers, artisans who raise and maintain ice-architecture and infrastructure
2
Storm-readers, diviners who use cold-sense and weather communion for navigation and prophecy
3
Frostborn elders, community leaders who maintain seasonal rituals to placate the element
Limitations
The Frostborn's innate attunement gives them an advantage, but non-native practitioners risk hypothermic shock as the element begins drawing warmth from the caster's own body to fuel its manifestations. Even among the Frostborn, summoning large-scale ice formations or sustained blizzards demands a period of recovery, during which the mage is dangerously vulnerable to both cold and heat.
Common Applications
- ✦ Breath of the Wastes, an exhaled cone of killing cold that flash-freezes everything in its path
- ✦ The Glacier's Fist, a massive hand of conjured ice that rises from the ground to crush or hurl a target
- ✦ Veil of the White Storm, a personal shroud of swirling snow and sleet that blinds enemies and deflects projectiles
- ✦ Shardcall, the detonation of an existing ice surface into a storm of razor splinters across a wide area
- ✦ Heart of Winter, a sustained ritual that drops temperature across a battlefield or settlement to crippling, paralyzing lows
Cultural Significance
Ice magic is not merely a weapon or tool for the Frostborn, it is a birthright and a spiritual bond, the proof that the Wastes have accepted them as kin rather than prey. Their command of this element has made them indispensable guardians of Landorya's northern borders, as no southern force has yet found a way to comfortably wage war in conditions the Frostborn can freely manipulate.
Lore
The Frostborn oral tradition holds that the first of their people did not wield ice magic, they survived it, and in surviving, were slowly remade by it over generations until cold became as natural to them as breath. There is a legend of a great Frostcaller known only as the Winter-That-Walked, who during a catastrophic southern invasion single-handedly raised a mountain range of ice across the passes, sealing the Frostbound Wastes for an entire generation. The act saved the Frostborn but also entombed the caster within the very glacier they had raised, some Elder Scribes claim that on the coldest nights, new runes appear on that glacier's face, still being carved from within. It is considered deeply taboo to use ice magic to harm a fellow Frostborn, as the element is believed to remember the transgression and turn on the offending caster in kind.
