Magic Profile

Nature
Tidal Water Magic is the mastery of oceanic forces, currents, waves, pressures, and the deep-sea flows, shaped into a living, responsive power that the Nereids wield with fluid grace. It feels less like casting spells and more like conducting a vast, breathing ocean: the practitioner becomes an extension of the water itself, bending its will through harmony rather than force.

Key Aspects

0

Current Shaping, redirecting and sculpting underwater flows

1

Pressure Mastery, compressing or releasing deep-sea pressures as a weapon or shield

2

Tide Calling, summoning and amplifying tidal surges over vast distances

3

Weather Weaving, influencing coastal weather patterns through sea-sky equilibrium

4

Aquatic Communion, merging one's awareness with the ocean to perceive all within it

Practitioners

0

Pearl Court councillors wielding tidal diplomacy and elemental authority

1

Coral Guard warriors enchanting tridents with pressurized water strikes

2

Ministry of Ocean Harmony stewards maintaining ecological magical balance

3

Elder Deepglow oracles whose intensified bioluminescence signals primal attunement

Limitations

A Nereid's command over water weakens significantly the further they are from a living body of water; on dry land, only the most powerful elders can sustain meaningful effects. Disrupting an ocean's natural balance to cast catastrophic workings is strictly forbidden, as any imbalance rebounds through the caster's own body.

Common Applications

  • The Crushing Deep, a focused column of abyssal pressure unleashed upon a foe
  • Veil of the Current, a swirling wall of redirected ocean flow that deflects projectiles and disorients attackers
  • Tidal Surge, a massive wave called forth from open water to reshape coastlines or break siege formations
  • Weavetide, a sustained ritual that alters regional ocean currents to shift weather patterns across coastal nations
  • Embrace of the Abyss, submerging an enemy or object into a pocket of pressurized deep-water stasis

Cultural Significance

Tidal Water Magic is the cornerstone of Nereid civilization, underpinning their ecological stewardship, their military defense, and their statecraft; without it, the ocean currents that regulate Landorya's climate would destabilize and coastal civilizations would suffer. Nereid envoys deliberately leverage their mastery of weather patterns and trade-route currents as instruments of diplomacy with surface nations, making this magic as political as it is elemental.

Lore

The Nereids trace the origin of Tidal Water Magic to the Age of First Currents, when the Celestials breathed life into Landorya's seas and gifted the first Nereids with the ability to hear the ocean's will. According to the Pearl Court's oldest oral records, the founding Speaker of the Tides, said to have possessed Deepglow from birth, swam the full length of the Abyssal Trench in a single unbroken tide and returned carrying a song that encoded the seventeen foundational forms of water-shaping still taught today. In the War of the Salted Shore, the Nereids turned back an armada of surface-world invaders without a single Nereid death, by redirecting a tidal surge along the continental shelf with such precision that every enemy vessel was beached simultaneously. The Pearl Court forbids any Nereid from using Tidal Water Magic to permanently alter an ocean current, enshrining this prohibition as the First Law of Harmony, the violation of which is the only crime punishable by exile from Nereidum.
