At fifty, he remains an Acolyte by choice rather than by failure — he has declined advancement twice, arguing that the equipment room of the Grand Observatory is where he is most useful. His estrangement from a sibling declared a heretic has left a quiet grief he tends like the observatory's instruments: carefully, and in private.
