Winston served twelve years as a Dragon Guard officer before a campaign in the border highlands showed him the true cost of an illiterate soldiery — men who could not read a tactical map, could not decode supply orders, and died because of it. He resigned his commission at thirty-six, used his military pension to rent a hall in the Common School district, and started teaching with his bonded dragon Emberspark as the primary object lesson in draconic lore. Authorities periodically pressure him to limit the curriculum to martial subjects; he periodically ignores them. His greatest personal satisfaction is watching a student from the lowest-tier mining families argue confidently with someone twice their age and social rank.
