Shadow has been running an unauthorized cover persona for three years — not for any mission or handler, but for themselves: a retired woodworker named Fen, who lives quietly in a border village and has never worked for anyone. Fen is the only identity Shadow has chosen freely. They return there when they can, for a few hours at a time, terrified that this is as close to a self as they are ever going to be allowed to have. If their handlers discovered Fen, the persona would be stripped and possibly used as leverage. Shadow is not sure which prospect frightens them more.
