Appearance
Physical: Clovis is what the Militia calls a late developer — he grew quickly in his final teen years and has not yet entirely caught up with his own frame, carrying himself with the slightly uncertain coordination of someone who is still calibrating. His brown hair is kept strictly to Militia standard, which he maintains with visible effort. His hands are large for his size and calloused from farm work, which gives him a head start on the Stone-Guard track.
Clothing: New Militia uniform, maintained at parade standard because he was told to maintain it and he tends to take instructions at face value; after six months in the field he is beginning to understand that some instructions have more flexibility than they are presented as having, which he finds philosophically unsettling.
Distinguishing Marks: A small scar on his chin from a childhood fall out of a Burrowtown treestand that he has been trying unsuccessfully to grow chin-hair over since he joined the Militia.
Relationships
- Cobble Ironthatch - His Stone-Guard track instructor, a figure of considerable professional awe, whose teaching style of precise demonstration followed by quiet observation Clovis finds exactly suited to how he learns
- Daggin Shortfern - The Scout Corporal from a different unit who has spoken to him twice — once to ask a question about a position Clovis was holding and once to observe that he was holding it correctly — interactions Clovis has analyzed in probably more detail than they warrant
- Ember Goldenash - The ancient Keeper of Ceremonies who he is aware has noticed him at the Lantern-Lighting; he does not know what to make of this and is handling it by pretending it is not happening

Backstory
Clovis grew up on a mid-sized farm in Thistledown's western quarter, the youngest of four siblings, and joined the Militia at twenty-one after spending a year on the waiting list — there were more applicants than open positions that intake year. He had no particular ambition for military service before the application; his older sister Nell had joined the Stone-Guard two years earlier and her letters home described work that required the kind of physical problem-solving he had been doing on farm equipment since childhood. He is six months into the training track and has demonstrated aptitude that put him near the top of his intake cohort, which both pleases him and makes him slightly uncomfortable because he had not expected to be good at it.
Daily Life
Recruit life is structured, which Clovis appreciates more than he expected — physical training before breakfast, skills sessions through the morning, supervised practical work on Stone-Guard tasks through the afternoon, maintenance duties in the early evening. He writes home twice a week and reads his family's responses more times than he acknowledges. He has attended the Lantern-Lighting ceremony at the Thistledown shrine three times since joining the Militia, each time staying until the fire is fully established and the ceremony is completely done, and has not been able to explain clearly why.
Secret
Clovis can hear something during the Lantern-Lighting ceremony that he is fairly certain no one else is hearing — a low resonant sound that begins when the flame catches and builds through the ceremony before cutting off when the fire is established. He went back alone the morning after the third ceremony and sat by the cold fire-pit for an hour. The sound was there, very faintly, even with no fire. He has told no one because he cannot explain it and because his training period is not a good time to be known as the recruit who hears things.
Story Hooks
- 1 Clovis approaches travelers after recognizing them as people outside the chain of command and asks if they can tell him anything about the Fire-Guard ceremony — specifically whether the resonant sound he experiences during it is documented anywhere, or is something he should be worried about
- 2 During a Stone-Guard training exercise, Clovis's unit discovers a blocked tunnel entrance beneath a Thistledown foundation stone; Cobble has reported it officially, but Clovis noticed something in the stonework style before it was sealed and needs help identifying what it means
Narrative Value
Clovis is the wide-open entry point — a young recruit whose perceived ordinariness conceals two developing plot threads: the resonant sound connecting to Ember's signal ritual, and the underground structure connecting to Cobble's discovery. He provides a player-accessible perspective on events that more experienced characters might not notice or might be too invested to question.
