Appearance

Physical: Wiry and quick, barely two feet and two inches — the shortest of her Scout Swarm unit and also the fastest. Her green eyes are always slightly narrowed, a permanent squint from years of reading terrain at a run. Her black curls are cropped close on the sides and bound at the crown with leather cord to keep them out of her face during traversal.

Clothing: Standard Scout Swarm field gear — earth-toned linen tunic over bracken-woven leggings, with a short bow slung across her back and a sling tucked into her belt. She has modified her boots with extra sole-padding of her own design, stuffed with dried moss, which she claims eliminates footfall sound on dry leaves. Her comrades are skeptical but cannot dispute her track record.

Distinguishing Marks: A dense grid of small scars on both knees and palms from her early training — she fell from a climbing frame seventeen times before she stopped falling.

Relationships

  • Cobb Ironroot - Her Stone-Guard counterpart in Thistledown's outer defense coordination — she finds his engineering approach maddening in its slowness and has profound respect for its results; they argue constantly and function excellently together
  • Her father, Erwick Dustfoot - The injury that shaped her life; she visits every week and never speaks about the raid with him, though they both think about it every time
  • Rook Thistlecrown - She tracked him for three weeks before his exile sentencing and is one of only two people who know the full extent of what he was doing in the outer fields at night — information the exile judgment did not include

Personality

  • Operates on instinct honed to near-analytical precision — she processes terrain, wind direction, and creature behavior simultaneously and acts before she can fully explain why, which is correct often enough to be unsettling to her superiors
  • Speaks in short bursts, leaves silences that others feel compelled to fill, and uses this to extract information in conversations without asking direct questions
  • Carries an earnest, almost aggressive loyalty to Thistledown's outer farmers — the families who live beyond the town's fortified earthworks and are always the first to suffer when Orcish raiders cross from the Iron Wastes — rooted in the fact that she is one of their children

Backstory

Lena grew up on a cattle farm at the northernmost edge of Thistledown's outer ring, the third of five siblings in a family that had endured three Orcish raiding seasons before she was twelve. Her father was a Militia volunteer who was injured in an ambush when she was nine and never recovered full use of his right hand. By fifteen she had already been running unofficial warning patrols along the farm's fence line for two years, borrowing her brother's short bow without permission. She enlisted in the Scout Swarm at twenty — the minimum recruitment age — and achieved her Third Watch designation within four years, the fastest advancement in the Thistledown company's recorded history. She has been involved in seven engagement actions against raiding parties, three of which were her own tip-offs that allowed the Militia to set the ambush rather than receive it. Her commanding officer has recommended her for promotion to Scout-Captain twice. Both times she declined, citing a preference to remain active in the field rather than administrative.

Daily Life

Lena's schedule follows the outer ring's threat cycle rather than the town clock. She sleeps in four-hour increments when active patrols are running, eats whatever she packed in the morning, and spends her off-rotation time at Thistledown's training ground drilling younger recruits in sling technique and terrain reading. She is a competent but impatient teacher — she demonstrates once and expects comprehension. On quiet weeks she visits her family's farm and helps with fencing and harvest, keeping her hands in the soil partly out of love and partly because she believes field scouts who forget what they are protecting become something else.

Secret

During Rook Thistlecrown's investigation, Lena found evidence that a second person had been coordinating with him from inside Thistledown's Council — someone she recognized but could not name without risking a case she could not prove. She submitted a partial report and withheld the rest. The unnamed collaborator is still on the Council.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Lena contacts outsiders after a Scout Swarm patrol vanishes — four experienced rangers on a standard rotation, no signs of conflict, no bodies, just absence — and the Militia command is delaying the search response in a way she cannot get an explanation for
  • 2 She leads a tracking job to the Iron Wastes border and discovers the Orcish raiding parties have stopped — not because of treaty or defeat, but because something in the Iron Wastes has frightened them into staying put, something they will not describe and she cannot see from this side of the border

Narrative Value

Lena provides a ground-level perspective on the Halfling civilization's external pressures — she sees the raids, the outer-ring families, and the political failures that trickle down into body counts. She functions as a scout guide, intelligence source, and action-oriented ally whose hidden information makes her more central to the settlement's security than anyone above her rank realizes.
