Appearance
Physical: Nettle is sturdy and permanently wind-chapped, with the squared-off hands of someone who does physical maintenance work daily. Her grey hair is cut short and practical. She has a good-humored face that defaults to a slight squint from decades of watching the road in all weather.
Clothing: A heavy-duty warden's coat with reinforced cuffs and a broad belt from which she hangs her toll ledger, a small hand-broom, a bridge-inspection tool kit, and a whistle. The coat is patched in four places and she has no intention of replacing it.
Distinguishing Marks: A gap between her two front teeth that produces a slight whistle on sibilant sounds, which she is perfectly aware of and finds neither troubling nor amusing — it is simply a feature of her speech.
Relationships
- Florin Copperdale - The grain factor whose trade caravans cross her bridge on a regular schedule; they have a professional relationship of long standing in which she maintains the bridge and he maintains his schedule and they are both happier for it
- Bumble Sweetroot - The Healing Hall apprentice who started stopping at the crossing to ask about riverside plant life; Nettle has answered every question with more detail than asked for, because she knows the river ecology genuinely well and is pleased to be asked
- Gust Ironwhipple - The barge captain whose river route passes under her bridge; they have a forty-year arrangement in which he reports river conditions upstream on his outbound journey and she reports crossing traffic conditions that might indicate demand fluctuations on his route
Personality
- Has an encyclopedic knowledge of who crosses her bridge, when, and with what goods, accumulated across forty-seven years of toll records that she maintains in a ledger system of her own design; she can identify by load pattern which farms are having a good year before the harvest reports are filed
- Holds firm on legitimate fees without aggression or apology — the toll is the toll, the rules are posted at both ends of the bridge, and any attempt to negotiate is met with a pleasantly implacable politeness that resolves in no reduction
- Genuinely interested in travelers as people rather than merely as toll-payers; she asks questions about where they have been and what they have seen, records the interesting answers in a secondary personal ledger she keeps separately from the official one, and often knows news from distant settlements before the Council does
Backstory
Nettle took the bridge-warden post at twenty-three, the youngest person ever appointed to it at the Thistledown Crossing, primarily because the previous warden had died suddenly and no one else applied. She has held the post for forty-seven years. During that time she has maintained the bridge through four major flood events — repairing it herself in each case before the official Infrastructure Compact repair team arrived — and has stopped two smuggling operations, one theft ring using the crossing as a distribution point, and one attempted unauthorized border-crossing that turned out to involve a case the Council considered diplomatically sensitive for three years afterward. She received a formal commendation for each of these and keeps them in a drawer she rarely opens.
Daily Life
Nettle's days are built around the crossing. She takes her post at dawn and maintains it until dusk, with bridge maintenance and physical inspection integrated into the early morning before traffic picks up. She knows the regulars by name, approximate schedule, and typical load, and notices when any of these change. Her personal ledger is written each evening by lantern light at her bridge-post shelter; she considers it a form of natural history documentation and intends, eventually, to donate it to the Story-Weavers' Circle.
Secret
Nettle's personal ledger contains, buried in seven years of entries, a complete record of a pattern of nighttime crossings that she tracked but never formally reported — small groups, consistent timing, no toll payment, using a secondary path around the approach that no one was supposed to know existed. The crossings stopped four years ago without resolution. She still does not know who they were or what they were carrying, and the secondary path was filled in the spring after the crossings stopped, by persons unknown.
Story Hooks
- 1 Nettle approaches travelers and asks whether they have crossed any bridges along the route they came from — specifically whether the approach roads showed evidence of recent use beyond what the posted traffic logs would suggest
- 2 The secondary path around the Thistledown Crossing has been reopened — she found the fill removed and the path cleared on a morning inspection — and the crossing's approach shows the same timing pattern she recorded seven years ago
Narrative Value
Nettle is an intelligence hub at a key chokepoint — a character who has observed and recorded more about the movement of people and goods through the Confederation than any other single Halfling, carrying an unresolved surveillance mystery that connects to whatever was crossing her bridge at night. Her personal ledger is a potential investigation resource.
