Story

WINSTON “WIN” SALTBEARD

  1. He’s seen something strange in the water and needs someone to investigate. Das war die Last, die WINSTON trug. Nicht schwer genug, um zu brechen. Aber schwer genug, um zu spüren. Immer da. Immer gegenwärtig.

Die anderen in Islanders of Shimmering Isles sahen es manchmal. In den Augen, die zu weit blickten. In den Händen, die zitterten. In der Stille zwischen den Worten.

Aber sie fragten nicht. Denn so war die Art ihrer Welt. Jeder trug seine Last. Jeder seine Geheimnisse. Jeder seine ungeschriebene Geschichte.

Und WINSTON? WINSTON ging weiter.

Backstory

Winston was born in Crescent Bay and has never lived more than a half-hour's walk from the water. He crewed his first boat at eight, alongside a grandfather who claimed to remember when the shimmer on the Gyre burned twice as bright. Win fished the same banks for four decades, outlasting partners, debts, and two particularly savage storm seasons that took seven boats and four men he'd known since boyhood. His wife Orea died eight winters past; he still sets a cup for her when the morning fog is thick. The stories he tells in the evenings at the harbor fire are part history, part invention, and mostly truth depending on the tide—Win being the only one left who knows which is which. He has lately been waking before dawn to sit on the jetty, watching something move beneath the water that he cannot name and will not yet speak of.

Daily Life

Win's days are spent on the water, fishing in the morning, mending nets in the afternoon, telling stories in the evening. He's a fixture of the village, known to all and loved by most.

Secret

2. He's seen something strange in the water and needs someone to investigate

Narrative Value

Win provides local knowledge, stories and legends, and quests involving the sea's mysteries; serves as a source of homespun wisdom and tradition.
